Anyone know of programs that require letter from a chairman? Do any programs require non-surgery letters?

Why don't you do the research yourself, like the rest of us who are applying? Most programs clearly list this information on their website. I don't know of any programs (at least the ones I'm applying to) that require a letter from a non-surgeon.

I got to agree.... You should have an idea of what programs interest you. So, take the time and check their websites. If they don't have a good site, then call their program coordinator and ask what documents they want. So, do your part and figure it out .....

Is it an absolute requirement from some programs to have one, or is it just a preference?

Has anyone noticed the variability of the websites? I think Vanderbilt has the best one I've seen in terms of information, and Brown...well, it looks like it hasn't been updated/upgraded in years (like it was made using netscape).

Looks like you guys going for Brown are a little late in applying since "The deadline for receipt of completed application files is Monday, November 1, 2004 (with the exception of the Dean's letter)." You guys better get one heck of a Dean's letter for them to accept an application that's almost five years past due. 😱

If one looks at web pages of multiple surgery and surg-subspecialties, you find folks way behind.... Yes, numerous programs are run by "old grey hair men". But, I think the mantra beat into residents from start to finish has a great deal to do with it..."we do it the same way everytime". It is really quite sad to see "big name" programs with such antiquidated/cumbersome webpages that are quite innaccurate.

It's somewhat symbolic (if not outright representative) of the lack of "cutting edge" culture you can often see. How often do we see new/young attendings bright and full of ideas for modernization.... just beat down.
