#10, #12, and #14.

#3 and #8 are the worst...makes you question how much else you "think" you know but actually don't.

At the moment most of them are part of my daily routine.

I try to focus on the future. For example...

9 weeks till Christmas
6 months till summer break
3 tests left in this semester
1 year and 9 months till we're 3rd year students
2 years and 9 months till we apply for our match.

It's not that long! Keep on trucking and we'll end up there soon!

The worst is thinking you got it and then you look at practice/back exams. Zero to hero back down to zero in 2.0s flat.
I get that a lot. I also wonder how I pass sometimes because I can't recall **** after I take a test.

#5. every freaking day. throw in a bunch of 8 too. then # 16= I am going to fail out of school and have zero valuable skills to offer anyone and be a failure at life.

have a nice day🙂

Nice catch, forgot about that one.

Take out "it wasn't as bad as I thought" and that's me -- totally!

Someone keep track of this thread. I think it should be resurrected in April 2013.

Twelve is so true. I think I've said those exact words on multiple occasions over the course of this past week.

It gets better by the end of 2nd year. Well, you get better at being a med student...it continues to suck. There won't be any more "I'm completely lost" because it turns into "That is just something I haven't memorized yet."

i get a lot of #5s as i listen to other people going through their cadavers during lab

This thread is too funny. Probably because, while I have enjoyed medical school as a whole, my first semester is something I prefer never to think about. I don't remember much of it before they got me medicated. Nobody put panic attacks on the list - that was a pretty regular experience of mine in the first semester of first year. In fact, at this time three years ago I would have been studying at my desk with a jacket and a fan handy because I was alternating hot flashes and cold sweats with my panic attacks.

And as you look forward to summer, just remember - it'll be your last... 😛

In all seriousness, though, I remember pouring my heart out to one of my professors about what a difficult time I was having. He said, "Every day I see practicing physicians who were first year students in my class. They made it, and you will, too." Adjusting to med school is difficult - I remember some very dark hours of questioning my decision to go to med school - and a fair amount of suffering. You'll adjust to what is expected. By second semester, I was a veteran and my stress level went way down. I really enjoyed second year - the work was a little harder, but I knew with no doubts that, one way or another, I'd handle it and things would come out OK.

Each year, you'll worry that you don't know nearly enough but you'll be amazed at how much more you know than the year before. It's quite a journey - enjoy.

If it makes you feel better, I absolutely loathed every minute of Gross Anatomy. Despite that, I know the anatomy that I need to know. But my professor said that if you didn't enjoy anatomy you couldn't be a good doctor, and he was dead wrong.

That's some encouragement I really needed. Thanks for posting.

De nada. I usually always stick my nose in when a first-year student is discouraged - because I remember my first semester as one of the most traumatic times of my life. I was miserable and half-crazy. Once I got past first semester - I've loved med school ever since. Can't guarantee results for you - but, chances are, you'll be fine soon.

Thanks for your post, Non-Trad, and all of you really. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way - it was starting to really get me down. I'm glad we're all going to hang in there together. 🙂 Good luck to all of you, and yeah, let's look back at this thread when we graduate.

I wish my school had practice exams.

#5 is the worst the day of an exam when everyone stands around beforehand and spouts off the minute details that they memorized, but no one else did. This results in every person in the room freaking each other out about the parts they didn't learn. Good times.

I ****ing hate that. I stay out of the room until a minute or two before the exam specifically to avoid such nonsense.

:wtf: The anatomy final was 2 days ago, and I already forgot 75% of the material that was on it. I'm screwed. 😱

definitely true, but at the same time, other people are thinking the same thing about you. that's why I don't worry about it. plus, dissecting is too much fun to get worried about actually knowing what you're dissecting.

I don't have first hand experience or anything, but all the 4th years helping us in the labs say they forgot everything from anatomy during MS1. You relearn it on rotations (or at least the parts you need to know).

We only have 3 exams for this term: 2004-2006. It sucks, because faculty and focus has changed over the years. We don't have any later exams because the students decided they didn't want instructors to return exams. SGA along with faculty drafted a policy that stated this, approved by the students. 🙁

I know what you mean. Our doors close 10 minutes before the exam starts, so there are about ten minutes where people talk about material. It can and will psych you out.

I would kill people if they did this to me before a test.

Luckily, we all just complain about how unprepared we are and wait for the test to start.

We're in neuro, and I pretty much feel lost all the time.

Before exams, I try to get people in the room to go around and share one tidbit that is helpful- I've gotten tons of questions right on the exams because somebody said something right before that I hadn't really understood, or didn't remember.

It's kind of funny reading this after finishing M1. Wow, I was wound tight early on last year. It's good I settled down by Nov/Dec otherwise I probably would've flamed out.

Strong bump, NTF 🙂

I think when people realize that EVERYONE in their class is experiencing the same exact emotions, it helps put them at ease. It did for me at least. And make no mistake about it - everyone's as lost.

some people can hide that they're lost better than others

starting MS1 next month....

i hate this thread because while im sitting here trying to convince myself "MS1 wont be that bad, I might even have some fun lololololol", the overwhelming response confirms that MS1, does indeed, suck balls

but it puts me at ease knowing that everyone goes through the pain

"If I just get this one down..."
repeat x infinity.

It isn't really as bad as some of the replies in this thread make it out to be.

Everything is new and somewhat challenging at first, but you start to figure out what's high-yield and what isn't. And you start to prioritize your life so you're not spending 2 hours learning minute, obscure detail that won't matter the day after an exam but rather you spend that 2 hours doing something relaxing and fun.

If you treat med school like an 8-4 job in which you get all your work done in roughly 6-8 hours a day, you'll have more free time than you think.
