UTDB
pros: relaxed environment, easy-going professors, access to all sorts of resources (TMC rules!), friendly employees and staff, HOUSTON
cons: outdated building (1st dental school to be built in TX afterall), looks old compared to UTHSCSA
😳 BUT it is ok! the new building is well on its way
😀 the "big" people said it would be ready sometime in 2012 so that means some of you guys will be spending the last 2 years of your dental school career at the spanking new, top-notched building!
😛
1. UTDB does not require you to have a laptop. It's your choice to own one.
2. I don't think you have your own chair here; you book appointments based on what's available and from what I've heard, most students do not have difficulties in finding chairs for their patients.
3. These business-type classes are "elective" classes. They are, therefore, optional.
4. ~ half a week for Thanksgiving Break, ~ 3 weeks of Winter Break, a week for Spring Break. 1st years have mandatory 2-week (I think) summer school in June. 2nd years have NBDE Part 1. 3rd years have clinic.
5. Is it tough getting patients? I haven't started seeing patients so I can't answer this question but from talking to the upperclassmen, I don't think it is.
6. What are the requirements like for graduating (in terms of number of each procedure you have to do)? Which school has higher requirements? NO clue. I think you can find more information on the school's website,
www.db.uth.tmc.edu
7. I've been told you do all of your lab work at BCD but you do lab work only at the beginning at SA. True? And what are your thoughts on this? At UTDB, you only have to do your own lab work at the beginning.
8. I remember the food court at Baylor. What's the food situation like at SA? Since UTDB is pretty much in the heart of TMC, you can find food like almost everywhere. There are vending machines at school. There's a common right next to the school. Baylor's cafeteria is right across the street. Methodist's cafeteria is a block away from school.
9. What do students typically do in their free time? Get drunk
😛 JK. We normally have social gatherings/potluck in our free time. BBQ!
10. How competitive and cut-throat do you think your class is? I think my class is competitive but the people still seem very helpful & are willing to share the good stuff that they have.
😀
11. When do you first start seeing patients? 2nd semester of 2nd year I believe. You get your first exposure to clinic in the first semester of dental school, though! They just started this this year.
12. Are charts and x-rays and things like that paperless? EVERYTHING IS ELECTRONIC
