So i had an interview at U of M 2 weeks ago, and one of the handouts they gave us had their average passing and failing rates for 2009.

part 1 (2009)
national pass: 81.3%
Michigan pass: 80.3%
national fail: 8.4%
michigan fail: 10.4%

part 2 (2009)
national pass: 81.2%
michigan pass:81.1%
national fail: 6.8%
michigan fail: 6.4%

for such a prestigious institution, why are michigan's stats worse than the national averages (esp the part 1 fail rate)? i mean i realize the differences arent HUGE, but i would still expect michigan to be above average in all these arenas. this is a bit disturbing bc ive been on interviews in which they've reported 100% passing rates... any thoughts?

Maybe something was different for that class. Did they provide you with the previous years'? I would like to know more about this as well. 😱

Pitt was below national average I was told form a D3 at interview.
Case interviewer presented me with their above avg. scores after going PBL (odd).
Mich said they were little below avg.
Schools seem to be right around avg. tho..
(if 79 is avg. 77-82 range maybe?)
so, I don't think it's gonna be a major factor in decision making..

Who said they had 100%?

OSU said they had 100% passing for the past few years

im no math wiz but 80.3+10.4=90.7 what happened to the other 9.3%

Part of the reason the Boards scores are so low is because the school tries to cram in a lot of medical knowledge as well as clinic training, effectively reducing the time that students get to study for the boards (a month or so from what I hear from my upper classmen versus other schools where students get two month breaks to study or more).

Might be on to something... Many schools don't have classes or have in-class reviews in preparation for the boards. Michigan, on the other hand, gets you doing restorations in your third semester and developes clinical skills throughout the year.
