i got accepted last year (2010) to a school that I did not really want to go to, coupled with getting on a wait list for a school I did want to go. Come acceptance deadline, i had to make the hard decision of seeing if the waitlist opens up (they told me they would likely pull of of the list this year). It didn't, so here I am applying again. med schools see that, so should i explain it on my secondary? 😕

I don't understand; why didn't you just keep your acceptance at the first school while you waited to see about the waitlist? You're allowed to hold an acceptance as well as stay on waitlists after May 15... Is there something else here, some other extenuating circumstance that you could refer to? Because otherwise it doesn't make much sense...

why apply to a school you didnt want to go to...

If you re-apply after declining an acceptance, all the med schools you apply to will know. You will probably not get into med school again.

Why on earth would you apply to a school you wouldn't go to? And THEN withdraw your acceptance when all you have otherwise is a waitlist? Is this for real?

You can stay on a waitlist past May 15...even if you have an acceptance...you just have to withdraw by the time you matriculate to the school you're in at

This just astounds me

I dunno, you tell us, how are going to explain it? They're sure as hell going to ask you to explain it at your interviews.

It better be something better than, "I REALLY want to be a doctor...but only if it's from certain schools..."

From what you've told us so far, we have to assume it's just personal preference and not geographic restriction due to sick family member, etc. Because if it was the latter, most people in those situations only apply to schools that would fit that bill.

Good luck, you will probably need it.

you are in some trouble so start brainstorming solutions. i knew someone that declined an mid-tier MSTP and then got into a top 3 school the next year but im sure thats quite rare.. but at least its possible.

Wait wait wait.... you pulled your acceptance because you hoped you would be pulled off a waitlist? Seriously? And you didn't withdraw from a school you didn't want to go to after you interviewed there?

I wish you the best of luck, because it looks like you just gave up your shot at medical school.

Well, there's a decision you'll get to regret for the next few decades...

For all the neurotic ppl on SDN it always amazes me that a story like this pops up ever so often. Most people would kill to get even 1 MD acceptance..

idiotic ... simply idiotic. Not only does this show lack of good judgement, it shows you're not serious about medicine. You'll probably not get in anywhere now. Have fun working in a cubicle.

FUBAR my friend, FUBAR. 😱

Haha, I'm sure he regrets his decision enough.

I don't know if this will throw you in deeper waters. But ever think about working in a clinical setting, or doing research while volunteering, for the next 2-3 years? The idea is that you realized that you were not ready for medicine, during the past cycle. And after three years of working alongside doctors and really getting your feet wet, now you better understand the rewards and demands of medicine, more mature to face the challenges ahead, and want another shot.

This may be a stretch, but it's at least more convincing than anything excuse concocted for a reapp cycle following a_successful_cycle. Yes, one acceptance is successful! And in a sense, you aren't lying. Your decision here says you don't know if you want to do medicine, right?

Your not telling us something. Looking through your old posts, I see that you took the MCAT in 2009 and applied for 2009-2010 cycle. But you retook the MCAT on 5/21/2010. You had to have signed up for it at least a couple of weeks earlier, which puts it before the May 15 deadline when schools start to really hand out waitlist spots. Clearly you were not putting too much faith in Rush (thats the only place you said you were waitlisted, but I couldn't find where you were accepted) and had already planned on reapplying. I am starting to question whether or not you actually got accepted last cycle.

Any new information you want to give us?

you're like a detective. :ninja:

Everything about this thread makes me 🙁

Complete *****. I'm sure I'll see you practicing medicine soon. As a D.O. Ahl, Ahl.

how are you qualified to give survival tips on SDN?

Don't give me that bull. If we wanted to be D.O's we would not be on this forum. Its a fact, that student will not get into an allopathic anytime soon because he screwed up. D.O. v. M.D. is matter of preference. Please don't whine to me.

OP, you are dumb. Possibly the dumbest person to ever get accepted to medical school.

However, I still feel bad for you. 🙁

Also, Espadaleader, chill with the survival tips and DO hate. You have 24 posts and I don't think you're in any position to rag on a medical doctor.

I think you underestimate the number of DO students that are in the Pre-Allo boards and vica-versa.

Dude, I would be dying to have that acceptance...

You make me so mad, so pissed off...arrghhhh!

Why? Why? Whyyyyyyyyy????

eh...if the tuition was super high i can sort of see it. most people don't think too hard about the costs when they're adding medical schools. if it was like in the upper 70's to 80k, it's a little hard to stomach. At least with a lot of schools you can claim residency in a year or two and save some money there.

I predict that every post you join will become a basket of flavorful goodness.

what does that have to do with the fact that you feel fit to give "survival tips" on SDN?

My guess is that it was NYMC. I thought maybe it was a DO school, but I didn't see any posts where she or he discussed DO schools. I could actually understand if you got an acceptance from a DO in the fall and didn't want to put in the $1500+ deposit, so you held out for other schools and they didn't come through. In that case I don't even know if they would know you were accepted on your MD apps.

If it was MD (and it looks like it was), echoing what someone else said, why the hell would you apply to a place you didn't want to go to? Most people apply to a few long shots, a bunch of good shots, and a few "safeties" just in case. You should know when you're applying that you may have to go to your safety. Up until a few weeks ago I thought for sure I would have to go to a $76,000 /yr DO school and I was ready to do it. I even gave them a $1500 deposit.

I mean I guess it doesn't help you to berate you like this, but you really should have told someone what you were doing on SDN. Then we could have prevented this. Plus I think scolding you may prevent other premeds from doing something this dumb.

Bottom line, I say you'd better come up with a good excuse for your interview. Maybe you should apply all MSTP and then you can tell them you wanted to be a medical scientist and that's why you decided to go another cycle. Something like that.

For those currently in the same situation as I was, first off, apply to the schools you want to go to (who wants to spend all that money?).

However, if things happen in life and you decide not to attend to the one acceptance you have - as long as you got a genuine reason for next year, you'll be fine (I was accepted into 2014 class, I had to relocate for my fam. So I took a year off. Received multiple interview/acceptance for this year).

and lol geez, didn't know this was such a popular thread. Everyone who posted is really cool! 👍 kthxbai.

You declined offers the first year and reapplied and got into another medical school the next year? Sorry, kind of confused lol.

As far as I am concerned there is one less med school hopeful to compete with.

So you turned down an acceptance while waiting on a waitlist.. because....? All that screams is that you want to be a doctor.. but only under certain conditions. Not going to look good when you apply, that's for sure. I'd start coming up with some good explanations, but that's just me.

Couldn't you just not divulge your previous acceptance and don't apply to that school again? And I'm pretty sure AMCAS only asks if you've ever matriculated to a med school before, not been accepted.

Some schools ask if you've ever been accepted before on secondaries, at least that's what I've read on some SDN forums.

Hello, I know it's been quite a while since anyone posted on this thread but I have an emergency question since I find myself in a similar situation as this person.

This year, I only got interviews from 3 schools. I got waitlisted at 2 schools, which I really liked, and I recently (two weeks ago) interviewed at the last school.

Upon visiting the third school, I didn't really like the school that much and don't think that I will be happy being there for four years. For this reason, I am thinking about withdrawing my application from this school before they give me a decision.

Reading through this thread, it seems like it's a really bad thing to reject an acceptance and reapplying. In my case, would it be ok for me to withdraw my application (before I get the final decision) and reapply next year?

Thank you so much!

I don't know why you would prefer that option but it would be better than declining an acceptance.

That would be fine. However, are you absolutely sure you don't want to find out if got in? Who knows, they might offer you a huge scholarship or something. And if they accept you then you will be a doctor! I would just wait it out and hope you get off a waitlist, otherwise go to the school and be a doctor!
