Hey everyone, this is my second time applying to MD schools. I only had 1 interview last year, and I am still on the waitlist. Like the title says, 3.6cgpa, 3.9 sgpa, 33P MCAT. On last years application I had -

-1 year research and lab. leader
~60 hours volunteering in an ER
-private tutoring.
- Leadership position in AMSA

I know my lack of interviews was due to a lack of clinical experience...right?

So this year on my application I have the above, plus-

~1 year volunteering with a cardiologist
~1 year volunteering with a primary physician
~1 year volunteering with a physiatrist
-have an EMT license, but cant find a job (CA sucks)
-joined an organization that tutors homeless children
-graduated with honors in biol. and minor in psych.
- got a LOR from my schools advisor and a physician (7 total LOR's)

So...what do you guys/gals think my chances are this year? Hope I get more than 1 interview... BTW last year I applied to 28 schools, this year 39. THANKS!!

EDIT- and I have a wet reckless driving on my record, happened 3 years ago.

if you dont mind, which schools did u apply for last cycle, and which one did u get waitlisted?

I have extremely same stats as: cGPA: 3.79, sGPA: 3.9 MCAT: 33N (V:8, PS:14, BS:11, verbal is killin me....)

BME from USC

I have relatively similar stats, less volunteer, more leaderships, some research. NON - CALI resident... so I really wanna go to cali schools but its even harder for me I think?

I applied to all the schools in CA except loma linda and stanford, got waitlisted at USC. Off the top of my head some of them were NYU, NYMC, MSU, Albany, Miami Miller, Boston, Tufts, GW, Rochester, Rush, FIU, Drexel, Jefferson, Loyola, UIC, UCF. If you want them all let me know I can look it up. And yes I believe CA schools prefer CA residents for the most part. Good luck dude!

Oh and I forgot the breakdown.. V:9 PS: 11 BS: 13. I hated verbal..

Maybe this needs more explanation.

And what did you do when volunteering for those docs? Was it more shadowing, or more being involved in patient care in some way? Any leadership? Did you get in more research activity? California schools seem to like a lot of it.

I think your lack of interviews might have had more to do with that reckless driving alcohol conviction than the lack of clinical experience. Screams irresponsibility to many schools. Limited ECs were probably merely the nail in the coffin.

I hope you have more luck this year with expanded ECs. Any sort of conviction is going to be hard to get past. There are so many applicants with clean records.

I did vitals, EKG's, patient history, etc.

Thalianox - Thanks, I know what you mean, but it was some time ago, I just hope admissions understands that people make mistakes.

^ Oh and as for the explanation, I was charged with a DUI, but brought down to a reckless, DMV dropped everything, so no license suspension, couldnt prove I was above the limit at the time..long story.

No I was not convicted for the DUI, but for the reckless driving I was. I did a lot searching here, and read a bunch of mixed opinions about the subject. Im just hoping for the best, since it is not as severe as a DUI, and it was 3 years ago. Also I managed to get an interview at a pretty nice school (but waitlisted 😡). So who knows. BTW thanks for the help everyone!

To me "reckless" and "DUI" sound just as bad. When I think "reckless" I think of a maniac driving all over the road side-swiping other vehicles and running stop signs and red lights. When I think "DUI" I think of a drunken maniac driving all over the road side-swiping other vehicles and running stop signs and red lights. :scared:

I think having something along the lines of anti-drunk driving activism/volunteer work would maybe help show that you aren't the person that you use to be, and hopefully you really aren't.

Its not about who you used to be. Its just a mistake, thats all. A moment of bad judgement. I would agree with you if someone had more than 1 drug/alcohol conviction, or a substance abuse problem. In that case it would be great to show that youre not the same person. But in that case I doubt med school is an option anway.

what does your criminal record or non-record have to do with getting interviews?

Yes I used MSAR. I didnt really apply to top tier schools last year. I did apply to many more this year, so Ill have to wait and see. I honestly think it was my lack of clinical experience, and Im sure the reckless driving affects my application, just dont know to what degree.
