Hello all, wondering what my chances are to apply this year.
Also not sure what to focus on on my application and where to find letter writers.


3.6 cGPA, 3.7 sGPA
512 MCAT 128/131/128/125
Biochemistry Major
Utah Resident

Small state university
1500 hours as an Endoscopy Technician, 100 hours as a volunteer clinic scribe.
150 hours non-clinical volunteering, with dementia patients (20 hrs), kids clubs at library (20), chemistry tutor (60), youth tennis coach volunteer (45)
500 hours biochemical research on melanoma treatment, 3 presentations, 1 national, 1 state level, 1 university level.
50-75 hours shadowing primary care, intensivist/hospitalist, GI, anesthesia.
50 hours as ACS Chapter president.
100 hours as paid youth tennis coach/assistant program director.
25 hours on non-profit board as Service and Volunteer coordinator. Non-profit sought to provide opportunities and events to reduce healthcare provider burnout and relieve stress.

Your main weakness is your non clinical volunteering. You have 20 hours in activities that medical schools are looking for. Many schools screen at 150 hours so you should accumulate another 130+ hours in activities such as food bank, homeless shelter, etc. before you submit your application.

The details you have left out of your WAMC are important. Your chances rely on your ability to communicate your mission and purpose through your activities, not just on your metrics and hours.

I see no examples of campus leadership, and no involvement in working directly to provide social relief to those in your community (I don't know what you are doing for 25 hours as a board member of the non-profit to count it; I don't include non-shadowing activities with fewer than 50 hours anyway). Because you don't describe 150 hours of service orientation activities (food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation), your file is at risk of getting screened out at most schools.

As for your question about letter writers: you don't have a pre-health advisor? Don't you have strong relationships with your faculty members in your biochem major or science courses? Is there a physician supervising your work as an endoscopy tech? Your research PI?
