Like a virgin, taking the DAT for the very first time: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=519880

Section | Old Score --> New Score

PAT | 19 --> 17 (42.4%) 🙁
QR | 18 --> 24 (99.4%) :laugh:
RC | 18 (PIANO'D) --> 20 (78.5%)
BIO | 19 --> 20 (91.8%)
GC | 22 --> 19 (79.9%) 😱
OC | 18 --> 21 (89.7%)
TS | 19 --> 20 (91.3%)
AA | 19 --> 21 (97.2%)

Uhhh... hooray? 😕

Stats: Applied to 17 schools, submitted 6/14 - second batch.

Overall/Sci/BCP
Undergrad GPA: 3.01/2.83/2.81
Graduate GPA: 3.87/3.85/3.85
Cum GPA: 3.19/3.11/3.12

Breakdown:

PAT: Prep materials - 5 test version of CDP. Test 1 - 18, Test 2 - 16, Test 3 - 17, Test 4 - 18, Test 5 - 20. Hole punching, angles, and cubes were a cakewalk compared to CDP. Keyholes were comparable. Pattern folding was half easy and half WTF, I got a lot of questions where the layout was asymmetrical (no two shapes were the same on the layout, etc.)... definitely something you don't see in CDP. The kicker: TFE KILLED ME. I was acing the CDP TFE and the real test was a completely different ballgame. Line counting is essentially useless which really threw me off, I had to go back to basics and actually try to visualize the figure. That's pretty much the only way you were gonna get through it with the version that I got. My Test 5 i got 15/15 of TFE, I wouldn't be surprised if I got like a 6/15 on the real thing.

QR: Prep materials - Math Destroyer, Being Asian. That's all you need. I did only 7/10 tests in there and was getting about 30/40 on each one. Also, the calculator is your friend. I used it liberally throughout the section (to double and triple check my work, and on problems where I had to divide like 2000/10 - LOL) and still had 3-4 minutes left. <3 the new calculator.

RC: Prep materials - NONE. Didn't get Piano'd this time. Thank GOD. I swear even if I got that passage again, I'd still mess it up like I did the first time. I did literally no prep for this section, I was always good at RC so it didn't bother me. My sections were on NMDA receptors, exercise and psychological health, and cancer. Awesome.

BIO: Prep materials - Destroyer, datprofessor.com (won it free in an SDN raffle, wouldn't recommend paying the full price - very buggy website). I was pretty bummed out that I didn't get a lot problems that related to upper level sciences courses (that would have been nice considering I just finished a Masters in Biomedical Sciences) , the whole section was a throwback to my gen bio days freshman/sophomore year of college. Lots of ecology, photosynthesis, phylum, and mitosis problems. Did surprisingly better than I thought though. M'eh.

GC: Prep materials - Destroyer, datprofessor.com. Didn't really spend much time studying this section cause I did well the last time.... and it shows. This version was very conceptually based whereas the last time I took it was very calculation based. Lots of destroyer-like questions that I wasn't expecting (i.e. which one of the following statements is false). Oh well.

OC: Prep materials - Destroyer, Odyssey, datprofessor.com, Anki. Probably like 75% of my studying time (~1 month total) was spent purely on organic. I went through Odyssey one and a half times, definite overkill. Made flashcards using Anki (it's a free flashcard program for your computer - heard about in one of the breakdowns, love it) for all the problems I got wrong. Went through those, knew it cold. Game over.

Hey, I am prepping for the DAT. What's the calculator like? Is it your basic calculator? Or is it like a scientific one?

I just want to get familiar with a similar calculator while working on Math Destroyer....since it's not like I can use my TI-89 that does everything :laugh:

Congrats btw!

It's a basic calculator, so no trig functions or anything like that. Looks exactly like this:

You've got your square root functions and the 1/x function which come in really handy for those work problems.

Just pull out the calculator on your computer and use that while you study, and make sure you use the mouse to click it.... the 10-key won't work in the center.

good job man! did you use topscore? if so what were your scores?

I already used topscore and achiever the first time I took it in 2008 and I looked at my friends recent copy and it was basically the same word for word.

So, no topscore and achiever this time around. 👍

when you say word for word do you mean
Old topscore vs New topscore, or Dat vs topscore

I'm wondering how your percentiles are so different from mine? I had a 20 bio (88%), TS 20 (85.2%) and 21 AA (93.4%), while you had Bio 20 (91.8%), TS 20 (91.3%), and AA 21 (97.2%). Those percentiles are WAY higher than mine for the exact same scores and you took the test only 6 days after I did.... seems weird. But nice job on the DAT!

I think the percentiles depend on the version of the test that you get, since there are different forms of the DAT, so the scale differs depending on the form of the test.

It really does suck that dental schools don't see the percentiles with the scores if the percentiles between the forms differ so much, since 97.2% is significantly different from 93.4% or 91.3% is significantly different from 85.2%.

It's true that most schools do not see the percentiles. However, some schools specifically request that you provide them with the unofficial score report with the percentile markings; one school that I know that requests this is OSU.

To the OP, over all nice improvement on your recent DAT scores. PAT can be kind of tricky, but I think your score is decent enough that it shouldn't hinder you that much. Overall, good work, the TS and AA are much better! 🙂

If it is exactly like that, am I able to go to "edit" and switch it over to scientific?

Great scores! 🙂 That sucks that you had to retake a 19/19/19 , but nice improvement! With your graduate GPA have fun in dental school next year
