UVA does not screen. I asked the Dr. Bailey, the admissions director.

nah duke screens, although i dont think its too stringent....but if the application is anything like last years, thats a screen in itself (only those who truly want to go there will actually finish that thing giving their 100%)

Vanderbilt <-- But secondary garantees an interview I hear

The way Vandy has done it the past 2 years has been that you don't need to complete the secondary unless you are invited for the interview. I believe they still let you know their secondary is online but you only need to complete it if you are invited to interview. The previous two years people have complained because they don't make this clear to applicants. Thus applicants fill out the secondary and send their money as soon as they get Vandy's letter about it but don't get an interview.

Vanderbilt only uses the primaries to decide if you get an interview or not. Hopefully they have changed things this year and explicitly let applicants know that they only need to complete their secondary if they are invited for an interview. I wonder how much money they have made these last few years on applicants who didn't know this and just sent Vandy their secondary fee and essay w/o being granted an interview.

So an interview invite from Vandy guarantees you must complete the secondary. (not the other way around...unless they changed things this year)

From the Vandy website:

2004 Admissions Season
If you are applying to Vanderbilt University School of Medicine for the 2004 First Year Class, these instructions should be followed to speed the admissions process:

1. Complete and submit the 2004 online AMCAS application.

2. Interviews will be offered after the 2004 AMCAS application has been screened. The Vanderbilt on-line secondary application is ONLY to be completed by those applicants to whom Vanderbilt has granted an interview. Note: This is a change from the previous two years. You will receive an invitation by mail inviting you to complete the Vanderbilt on-line secondary application only if you were selected to interview.

Are we sure that Pitt screens? I didn't think they did at all last year, and on their website they mention the $60 fee for all applicants applying, which leads me to believe that they don't screen prior to the secondary....although they do offer pre-secondary interviews.

If someone knows anything to the contrary, just post it here.

yup, they do. i talked to the office of admissions today. they're not gonna start sending stuff for a while.

from website:

2. Supplemental application packet
We will review your AMCAS application (according to medical selection committee procedures). If you?re among those applicants who best match our initial requirements, we will ask you to complete a supplemental application packet.

I thought Mayo used their phone interview in lieu of a secondary. They e-mailed me a few weeks ago and wanted money.

i'm surprised to hear that pitt screens. last year it was one of the first secondaries I had received. I don't even think that my amcas was verified when I had received it.

I also don't think that Iowa screens.

For last year, Case Western Reserve and Loyola also screen. Case Western has been known to cut their applications in half before they send out secondaries.

Yeah...I was thinking that it must be a new thing, because they didn't last year. Oh well...thanks for the clarification :)

Hi,

Are you guys sure that northwestern screens? I tried starting this thread but nobody replied; I guess my subject line sucked.

I'm pretty sure NW screens. 70% get one, 30% don't. Their secondary packet includes this cover letter that each app gets with a personalized bar code. We have to return that when/if we send back the secondary. I figure they can't do that for everyone, so they had to institute some form of screening...?

I'm not sure what their criteria is for screening. i.e. specific cutoffs or if they take tijme to look at the whole amcas app

my 2 cents.

.... so what does.... "screen" actually mean?

i know what it means literally but...... i mean im not down with all the pre med lingo yet :D

to "screen" means that the school doesn't automatically send secondaries to all the ppl who sent the primary AMCAS; they pick and choose the ppl who go onto the next stage.

apparently, u of mich does screen in an odd way...i think the figure is about 25% of applicants that get asked to send in an LOR although everyone (?) can submit the secondary. Furthermore, qualified ppl from CA and Michigan (w/stats, I think, at 33+ MCAT and 3.7 GPA, although I'm not sure) get to bypass the secondary stage and get directly called for interviews.

So I'm not sure whether to include them in the list....

Although Mayo does not have a paper secondary, the phone interview is the secondary and not everyone gets invited to do it. The $$$ are just for Mayo to review your AMCAS to see if you even get to the phone interview stage.

ahhh i see. thanks spumoni620

=D

OHSU, VCU, meharry, loyola. I have called all of these this afternnoon. Some screening is as simple as checking GPA and MCAT scores, others review the whole file.

Just cusious...what's the logic behind automatically inviting CA folks to Michigan. i can understand why they might do this for MI residents but for CA? why not another place with large applicatns like NY or TX?

thanks mdmiracle, i forgot about that...

as for umich only bypassing michigan and cali residents straight to interviews- it's probably due to those two states being the most representative of the student body. a lot of cali people go out of state for school and a lot of michigan people stay instate. tx and ny schools are way more accommodating instate than cali. i wouldn't sweat it though, since more competitive applicants from the other states got the LOR and picture request by email. i think it'll all work out in the end.

maryland screens?
is that only for out of state? hope i dont get pre-secondary rejected from my state school!

OK, so given that the following schools screen, when can we expect the actual secondaries if our AMCAS is up to par?

Stanford, U Pitt, Case Western

What's the usual amount of time it takes for the screening to be completed?

Case isn't screening. Just sending out secondaries randomly. I got mine two weeks ago, and I'm not really that strong of a candidate numbers-wise.

FYI- I'm not from CA or MI but I did get an interview invite before I turned in my secondary. Do I still have to complete it? I think so... (because I am doing it at the moment :) )

there's no way that University of Illinois- Chicago screens because I have yet to take my MCAT in a week and got the secondary. I am out of state too.

Has anyone who was verified after 7/24 gotten a secondary from Northwestern or one of the UC's? The only secondaries I've gotten from screening schools were UC Irvine and Loyola.

Northwestern has been sending out secondaries already, and if you read through the forum you'll see some postings about this. Many UC's (UCSD, UCLA, UC Irvine) have also been sending out secondaries. However, since a lot of people apply to these schools, it may take a while for them to screen everyone who applied early

Does anyone know the percentages of applicants out-of-state that get Iowa's secondary?

Hi,
Some say UIC screens and some say they don't, so what's the verdict??

Does anyone know for sure if University of Illinois - Chicago screens or not?
