University of Florida 2015 Applicants.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm applying OOS but I'm glad to see someone else on here applying to UF! I've been wondering! Do you know the timeline for decisions? I've been searching on their website but haven't been able to find it.

I've applied to UF as my in-state. As far as timeline. If I remember correctly from my friends applying last year, notifications of interviews were in February and decisions were made late in March. UF is one of the last schools that you will hear from, at least that's how it seemed last year.

I'm applying to UF in-state. Have you check out the new small animal hospital? It's aaaamzing!

This is true.

Last year the interview dates were March 6 and March 20. I would assume it would be somewhat similar this year. Definitely agree that they notify you very frustratingly late. The only good thing with being so late is that you do not have too much more time to wait after the interview to find out the results. They are pretty good about confirming that they have all your application materials. Good luck to all those who applied 🙂:luck:

I applied as an in-stater, but expecting the worst and hoping for the best.

I applied to UF as my IS as well as Cornell and tufts. I hear UF gives preferential treatment to their undergrads last ear 50/88 students cane from UF. That seems really high.

Is anyone a former usf student out there applying to UF?

They may give preferential treatment to UF students, but it may just be due to the percentage of students that apply. The majority of people who want to go to vet school who live in Florida go to UF, because they have the vet school and have a pre-vet major. I don't know if that's really what's going on, but I know only know of 3 people from my school that applied there last year and 2 of them got in.

Good luck to everyone.

There's no pre-vet major at UF. Just fyi 🙂

is it animal science? or just like a biology with a pre-vet track? whatever, they offer the two classes that you need to get into their school so a lot of people go there

seansie,
I am currently taking Immunology at USF, earned my bachelor's in psych from there many moons ago...

I'm graduating from USF in May and I applied to UF as my in-state. I was also worried about the percentage of undergrads from UF accepted, but it does make sense that most people wanting to be a vet will go there for undergrad. Good luck to everyone!

A large percentage of those who are pre-vet are Animal Science majors. They have what they call a "pre-professional track" that includes all the vet school pre-reqs. I love it and I feel like the non-pre-req AS classes like Repro will really help in vet school.

IS here...too bad interviews are so far away!!!

OOS here, does anyone know the stats for OOS normally accepted?

Last year the class size went from 88 to 100 students but the increase was IS only! Out of the 100, 11 were OOS. I heard that throughout the coming years they want to keep adding to the class size, but I don't know for sure if they will this year, if they do it might be OOS because of the tuition.

A little birdie at the UF CVM told me that they were increasing OOS state spots for next year to help bring in more money. ~20 additional spots.

I've heard something like that as well, I work at the new SAH, but since it's not something they have officially announced, I don't want to claim something if it isn't 100% definite!

As a current 2014-er and a member of the student-faculty committee, I am 90% sure that they will NOT be increasing the class again this year. I've been told that they want to see how the new class size (100 students) does over the next few years (and especially when we get to clinics in 1.5 years) before they increase the size again. However, with the economy doing so badly and a brand new 160 person auditorium being built next semester, they may just increase the class (esp OOS) again.

Also, this past year the amount of OOS spots did go up (there are 12 this year up from 6 or 8 last year), and they may increase the proprotion this upcoming year (it seems to change a little bit every year).

Good luck everyone and see you all in Feb/March for interviews!

Does anyone know if UF requires us to send out transcripts again after we receive our fall grades if we are still in undergrad? I can't remember which schools required this and which didn't...

FYI... email sent out today from Florida, key info:

Dates to remember:

January 7 Fall transcripts are due (we will accept transcripts that are a couple of days late)
January 31 Notifications sent to candidates selected for interviews (may use a combination of regular mail and email)
February 12 Interviews
February 19 Interviews
March 11 Letters of acceptance will be mailed (may also contact via email)
May 20 Spring 2011 transcripts are due

I got the email. I am a bit surprised that the interviews are a month earlier this year, I thought they were always in march. I guess they moved things around a little this year, which I dont mind.

Very excited interviews are earlier this year. Less waiting. Although now the wait for interviews begins. Thinking happy thoughts😀

Agreed too, I'm not a patient person. Excited to hear though. OOS, hoping I at least get an interview to give me an excuse to visit my cousin in Gainesville.

Just wondering if any UF applicants are hoping to go into aquatic animal medicine. It is one of the main reasons I applied, and their certificate program looks amazing!

Does anyone know if they allow OOS students to gain residency? I couldn't find anything on their website... not a deciding factor but it would be nice!

Within one year you'll have residency. They're really good about that. So only one year of paying out of state tuition!

Thanks! Is there anywhere on their website that goes over that?

I learned this information at the open house in 2007 that the prevet society at my school went to. I was a NJ resident at the time so I made a mental note of it! Now I'm a FL resident so it doesn't matter for me anymore. I would assume it's somewhere online, but idk for sure.

Sorry to burst your bubbles, but that's not true. I'm a current UF student who was out of state when i was admitted. The policy to gain in state tuition after one year ended two years ago. No UF Vet student can gain in-state tuition while in school. If you have your heart set on UF, move to Florida for 1-2 years before applying to school.

Thanks for the info! I was just curious. It doesn't deter me from wanting to go there!

That would have been really amazing if that was still ineffect.

I'm hoping they open more Out-of-State spots. I didn't apply this year but, I'm applying this coming Fall (next cycle.) Really nervous about it considering my GPA isn't so great but, UF is the most logical choice for the field I want to go in to. So many options for wildlife/zoo medicine 😱

Oops, sorry for the false information. I was told that back in 2007 and didn't realize it changed. They were so reassuring back then that anyone that's OOS will gain in state tuition.

... But I'm so excited... 8 days until interviews go out!!!!

🙂 good luck to everyone! 🙂

AHHH my heart DID stop when I saw this thread had been bumped (last school I am waiting to hear from). Phew, scare over. Wow 8 days? How precise - was this in the email they sent us a month or so ago (that I must have overlooked) or do you have inside info? Anyway thanks for the heads up!

Aww sorry! No I don't have inside info, it's just what was mentioned on the email- January 31st! I just don't know if it'll be snail mail or email.... :-/

:xf:

The last couple of years it has been snail mail. I wish they would just email and let us know ASAP!

I can't imagine it going out snail mail on the 31st if the first interviews are on the 12th...

True that is very close. I have had interviews there the last two years and both times I did not have much time to get ready (around 2 weeks) and both times I heard by snail mail. Maybe they are beginning to switch certain notices to email?

So Ms. Chaparro finally responded to my friend's e-mail and her response stated that they would be indeed sending the interview invites through an e-mail!! 😀

hope this helps!

Hey that is great! Good to know. Saves time and paper 🙂

Hey all, hate to hijack because I'm not applying til next cycle, but if you look at this website...http://www.vetmed.ufl.edu/education/dvmstudents/curriculum.html

There isn't a fall semester junior schedule or a spring semester senior schedule. The lack of a senior spring one makes a bit more sense to me (because of rotations?) But can anyone explain the lack of a junior schedule for the spring? Is that time devoted to externships?? Thanks 🙂
