A post made ~ 2 years ago pointing to a decline in the interest in ds applicats (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=518211) was met with some resistance/skepticism. The recent release of information by ADEA reveals some interesting observations. In 1990, roughly 9% of the individuals who took the DAT did not apply to ds. From 2000 to date, the number of applicants has exceeded the number of DAT examinees probably because we have been seeing an increase in the number of applicants who were not willing to concede defeat.

DAT Count

In 2002 there was a decline in the DAT count, which bounced back to 2001 level for 2003. Thus the 15% increase (for 03) does not represent a true increase in the number. For 2004 and 05 there is roughly a 10% increase in this category. For year 2006-2009 the numbers have remained relatively unchanged. It is interesting to note that in the decade from 1990 to 2000 there was a 29% increase, whereas for the years 2000-2009 the increase has been less dramatic at 21%. It should be understood that the DAT Count represents only individuals who took the exam for the first time.

Applicants

For 2001 to 2003 the number of applicants has been in the recouping stages. Starting in 2004 there has been a steady increase of roughly 15% until 2007. The years 2008 and 2009 have experienced a decreasing numbers of applicants or, if you will, we appear to have at least reached a plateau. The previous decade showed an increase of 52% while for 2000-2009 the increase is of 57%.

Whether or not we will see an increase or a decrease in the number of applicants for 2010 remains to be seen, but it could be that the number of ds applicants is on the wane relatively to the peak in 2007.
