Which specialties are in demand?

I understand that FM and IM can find work anywhere in the country. But the market in NYC is kind of saturated for doctors. But if you absolutely must work in nyc, what specialties are in demand outside of primary care? I know ortho is #1. And I think it's the best specialty overall. But anything else? How about if you wanted to do PMR, ER, or noninvasive cardiology. Which one would give you the best career in nyc?

I don't get what you mean by "best career in NYC". Do you just want good compensation while still being able to work/live in the city?

I'm just going to say what everyone else is. Do what you actually want to do, the money shouldn't be that high on your priority list, because you'll be making enough anyways. There are ways to make good money in any specialty (even FM), and obviously it is easier to in some specialties than in others, but if you're smart enough and have good business sense you can make anything work for you.

The market is cyclical so what may be in demand today won't be in demand 7-10 years from now when you are looking for a job.

i want to be able to "advice" people casually. Like if they hurt themselves or got some problem and ask me for casual advice i want to be an authority on the subject. or possibly be a specialist that they would go to. like if some hot woman friend's kid hurt his knee she needs a friend to tell her honestly if the kid needs a surgery or not. also it's true that compensation varies and all that. but for some specialties even within the specialty NYC is just terrible in terms of compensation. Like if you are PMR you are really competing to get patients. If you leave nyc, no one will miss you.. But some other specialties like Cardiology or Ortho i think there is still demand in nyc even if the salary overall goes down in the future.

does neurology have anything of this nature? where for example you got pain or numbness in your arm and 2 different neurologists will give u completely different advice or will give u different advice than some other specialist?
i know that a non-invasive cardiologist would not make as much money if he sticks to doing no procedures but he can become the expert even in the most saturated market like nyc. and he can set his own hours just like primary care.

Then you have to realize your plan to become some colloquial street doctor is ridiculous and no one with a real health problem would take you seriously.

What's your point? Yes some people may want to live in the middle of nowhere and there are more career opportunities out there. You may even live on a resort somewhere. An advantage of FM is that you can practice even abroad, like in Australia, and get paid well. But what if I want to practice in NYC? If you read some posts you'll notice that nyc is oversaturated. Primary care doctors only do well-woman exams and prescribe common medications. If they want anything more complex they work as hospitalists. So what's good in NYC?
And I never said I wanted to be any kind of street doctor. But if an acquaintance asks me for some casual medical advice I dont want to be like a pathologist, I want to be impressive. But more importantly I want to have a life outside of medicine. I know I would have everything including job stability if I could get into Ortho. But I don't think I will ever match ortho..

Anyway which specialty is most lifestyle friendly: anesthesiology, family medicine, or ER?

Medicine in general is not lifestyle friendly. Considering the average doctor works somewhere around 55 hrs/week, you will spend around 50% of your waking hours working. You want to be a doctor just so you can impress hot women with your "advice"? Yeah, that's not going to work. I suggest you become a physical therapist.

Gas and EM are both "lifestyle" specialties, but man, if you want a real cush job, set up a FM clinic where you set your own hours.

1) Got into a DO school but wants an MD.
2) Wants to match either Ortho in NYC or maybe FM in Canada.
3) Wants to practice in NYC.
4) Thinks it's OK to drink on the job. Drink heavily.
