Syracuse, N.Y. -- A dentist accused of fracturing patients jaws while pulling teeth and leaving instruments behind during root canals has been disciplined by the state.
Dr. Deepika Reddy, of East Syracuse Family Dental Arts, 7040 Manlius Center Road, Manlius, has been temporarily barred by the state Education Department from practicing endodontics, the branch of dentistry that includes root canal treatment, and all oral surgery, including extractions, until she completes retraining courses at the University of Buffalo Dental School.
The state also fined her $1,000.
In a signed consent agreement with the state Education Department, Reddy did not contest the states charge that she practiced dentistry with negligence on more than one occasion. She agreed to the penalty, which includes a partial suspension of her license. The state Board of Regents approved the agreement. Reddy, contacted Monday by The Post-Standard, declined to comment on the case.

The state said Reddy botched the treatment of seven patients between 2005 and 2010, leaving some of them infected and in pain.
In a statement of charges, here's what the state said she did:
Reddy fractured two patients jaws while attempting to extract teeth.
One of the patients had come in for a routine teeth cleaning. During that procedure Reddy decided to extract a tooth deeply rooted in the patients jaw bone. Reddy ... failed to recognize that she was not competent to perform the complicated procedure she was attempting, resulting in pain and severe harm to the patient.
In three cases, Reddy left instruments in patients teeth.
While drilling the patients teeth during root canals, Reddy broke off files and left them behind. In two of those cases she subsequently performed restorative work on the same teeth, never recognizing instruments had been left in the teeth.
