Greetings fellow pre-dents. Took the DAT today in downtown Atlanta, 6000 miles away from home. Currently chugging some vino, so I apologize if this doesn't translate 100% coherently. (Sadness over lack of competitive scores, kissing UoP goodbye, Armorshell, if you're reading this, sorry to let ya down on that front). Oh and before I go into this long rant, I want to thank everyone here at SDN for the incredible wealth of information in this process, it is invaluable.

Just want to preface with a some comments on the overall experience. Like has been said, the markers dry out like crazy if left uncapped, AND sweaty hands do not make for easy uncapping. I'd have killed for the dry-erase markers I had been practicing with. What's up with the crazy security, thumb printed, digital prints of both index fingers 3 times, plus after break and after the test, as well as turning out all pockets and running hands through pockets... paranoia paranoia. Also, very good advice on not downing the coffee or even moderate amounts of any liquid, had to pee pretty bad by the time the break released me from my bondage.

The scores:

PAT: 27 (99.7)
QR: 16 (63.5)
RC: 20 (64.3)
BIO: 23 (97.4)
GC: 21 (87.0)
OC: 22 (90.4)
TS: 22 (95.6)
AA: 20 (87.6)

PAT:

I honestly thought it was a cake walk, after the sciences I was pretty bummed, but after this I was frickin sky high. CDP was great for this, and the ADA 2009 paid test was perfect, same score even. I can't remember how comparative Topscore was, but it wasn't far off by any means.

Key-Hole: Annoying, several of the keys really were not proportional to the holes, they need to work on this.

TFE: Cake, cake, cake! Way easier than CDP. I had at least 3 questions where they asked for the side or front that was identical or nearly identical to the other (e.g. one side of a pyramid looks identical to the other, etc).

Angles: Easier than CDP, but still annoying, probably where I lost points. I definitely remember Topscore angles and Kaplan BB to be much easier than the DAT. Again, the ADA 2009 test was the very best comparison, but CDP will suffice.

Hole punch: Pretty simple, nothing weird, like punches on folds and the like. The main problem was that the questions were inconsistent, some were tiny weird holes and some were huge glaring eyeballs of doom (well, more like giant mutated pixie eyeballs, since they were even easier).

Cubes: Cake cake cake again. CDP is more difficult. I didn't bother with any of those cube counting tactics, just too easy, even reviewed all of them to verify.

Pattern folding: Pretty tough, some of these were really weird, but nothing unreasonably insane. Comparable to CDP, maybe slightly more difficult on average, but I seem to remember CDP and others having some oddballs that were impossibly difficult, not the case on the DAT.

QR:

Yeah, not surprised here with my score, ran out of time with about 10 questions to go, wildly guessing to finish. Honestly, these questions were all pretty easy, I even thought I was keeping a good pace (incorrectly obviously). The problem formats were very close to DAT Destroyer, except easier. If you can get the timing on DAT Destroyer Math, you really will destroy this. Most of my math foundation was from Khan Academy though, excellent source for the math inept like myself.

Geometry: 1-2 problems
Trig: 2-4 problems
Probability: 2-3
Stats: 2-3
Mostly word problems (just like the ones you see in math destroyer, distances, percentages, etc), and algebra, nothing too daunting. I honestly don't remember seeing anything on x/y axis, slopes, etc (coordinate geometry).

Sources: Math Destroyer, KBB, Khan Academy

RC:

Only section I'm even mildly pissed off about, not humbled at all, just cheated. I did fine, even awesomely on all the pre-tests. Alas, time somehow crept up, broke my jaw and ran off with my wallet. Pretty easy overall though, I can only recommend practicing with pre-tests, and really really reading fast. Though I'm sure I was mildly fatigued by this point.

Topics: Epithelium, Fungi, and Ethics (this final one, on ethics, must have been twice as long as the others, with virtually no search and destroy, absolutely screwed my score in RC with the time I had left).

Biology:

As everyone has said, this section is 75% reasonable, 25% crazy random stuff. Had a few genetics questions that wasted my time solving, some weirdly worded stuff you can't really prepare for, and umm, I highly recommend reading up thoroughly on lab techniques, yes the really weird ones you would only find details on through wikipedia or in Campbells (I believe I saw something applicable from those chapter 18-21 notes, amazingly enough). Most surprising thing was basically seeing nothing from cellular respiration/photosynthesis. Don't really remember anything from taxonomy, maybe 1 question from ecology and plants each, really bummer as I studied both to the max.

Sources: Barron's AP Bio, Campbell's 8th, wikipedia, Khan Academy, and KBB; (Destroyer Bio was pretty much a wash, if you've got the time to spend on it, read chapters in Campbell's instead, much more fruitful).

GC:

Very reasonable, hardly any calculations, it's just been a really long time since I took it, though Chad prepared me marvelously, I only wish I'd had time to go through all his quiz questions again (oh and fastplay is a real gift for those videos, I didn't know about it until about a week ago). Destroyer GC was far far beyond the level of the actual test, and KBB was just sub-par for it as well.

Sources: Chad, Destroyer

OC:

Seriously disappointed here, thought I was going to completely annihilate this section as I was pretty damn good with it in class, also put in a lot of time re-studying for it. The questions were fairly basic, Chad and Destroyer will prepare you very well for it. The reason I think my score wasn't better was that in retrospect I think there were quite a few questions that seemed to have obvious answers but were actually done that way to fool you into picking said answers. Overall concept oriented, only a handful of questions required synthesis.

Sources: Chad, Destroyer (only section Destroyer truly shined in, IMO), Ochem as a second language I & II

For all of the above I also used Anki, while not the godsend people make it out to be, it is a very useful tool for making notes across a long period of studying, and then keeping up with past studied material.

Okay, here's the thing. I spent hundreds of dollars on all this study material, and I'm flying back home on the 4th of April. I have no desire to take it with me or mail it to anyone from the islands, as you can imagine shipping is a good deal more. So, if anyone needs a full pack of DAT material, I will give it to you for FREE, however, the one caveat is that you must pay for shipping (I imagine somewhere between $18-$30, or more if you want something crazy like UPS/Fedex). DO NOT post a bunch of replies here asking for it, send me private messages and I will decide who to send to. If you didn't read my breakdown, this pack will include: Barron's AP bio, KBB, DAT Destroyer, Math Destroyer, ADA 2009 paid test, and Ochem as a 2nd language I and II.

Off to the land of inebriation I descend...

P.S. dentalWorks: played a good deal of League of Legends yesterday, good times and great pre-DAT stress relief, highly recommended to anyone out there, cramming the day before just isn't worth it.😉

P.P.S. Any input or comments is perfectly welcome, though I don't think I'm up for another round of testing (re-testing). Just saying.

Ok I will say it... RETAKE 😀

Just kidding... Great job and congrats on being done! Make sure to participate in the poll for the HOTTEST Dat prep materials for 2011!👍

???? I'm confused on why ur sad...U DID AWESOME!!!!! uop loves scores over 20 ...I think ur nuts...u have absolutely amazing and competitive scores u shouldn't kiss uop goodbye!

Can you pass some of that vino over here?

Heh, no way! 😉 I had a few bottles pre-bought for just such an occasion.

Heh, that's what my dad said actually, I told him screw off. And sure, I'll check out the poll.

I keep reading stuff about UoP requiring a 21 in RC and a 21 AA, which is why I said that. Thanks for the encouragement though, it is appreciated. 🙂

Kahr!!! Congrats man!! 20 is awesome... don't lose hope on UOP. Still totally doable! Especially if Armorshell sends good karma your way! I shot a PM to you, between late night bio and physics studying. Let me know! Enjoy the flight home!!

awesome job man! we don't want to hear from you for at least a week, get the hell off of sdn and party, you deserve it.

Congrats, good solid scores.

Not sure why you think UoP is out of reach...I am looking at ADEA book right now, their averages for 2010 were:
20AA / 21TS / 21PAT (apparently they love PAT ~ your strong suite)
3.38 overall GPA and 3.46 science.

Assuming your GPA is in the right place, I think your plenty competitive for that school

You did great!... There is no reason to stress over those scores!..... You worked hard for them and you should be proud of it..... If it is something you are worried about, you could consider taking it again if you wanted just because you might end up getting an easier version of the test that better suits you and you could blow it out of the park!!!..... But if I were YOU, I wouldn't touch the DAT again!...... 😀

Great scores. You did it!!! Congrats!

Dude, you'll get UoP!! I called them up a while ago and they told me they want 20's on every section excluding QR...so you're in great shape.

Fantastic scores and a pretty sweet spread as well.

Now just nail the rest of your application!

Great scores! don't go to that UofP interview thinking your score is not good enough, as it will affect your performance in the interview.

Can you post your Topscore (or other tests) results?

Well, I'll be, I thought it was higher... but good news on the PAT front I guess! Thanks for this, as well as everyone's encouragement regarding UoP, through this thread and in PM. My sGPA is a 3.7, 3.74ish overall, yes I realize that's good, I just felt like my AA was too much of a deciding factor.

Great scores! don't go to that UofP interview thinking your score is not good enough, as it will affect your performance in the interview.

Good advice indeed, if I do get an interview I won't go in thinking like that, if anything I'll think they do think it's good enough if they invited me. Hmm, my scores...

Test | Bio/ GC / OC / PAT / RC / QR
------------------------------------
ADA1 | 21 / 21 / 28 / 20 / 19 / 20
Kap1 | 21 / 17 / 21 / 21 / 24 /
TS1 | 18 / 18 / 18 / 21 / 21 /
Kap2 | No DATA (I finished the test up to QR then stopped)
TS2 | 19 / 18 / 21 / 23 / 22
TS3 | 18 / 19 / 19 / 22 / 29
ADA2 | 21 / 20 / 21 / 25 / 23

I did a few of the QR tests just at my own pace, so not including scores.

CDP: 17, 16, 18, 16, 19, 19, 18, 18, 21, 23 ... did probably 5 more random ones as well, all 21-23 range.

Regarding the free materials, I am still thinking it over because of the great interest, if I don't respond please don't take it personally, it just means I decided to send the stuff to someone else, I will however mention that I have sent it on this thread when I decide.

Kahr,
Those are some awesome scores! You'll definitely get in somewhere. Also, YOU'RE FINALLY DONE!!!!!!! Congratulations!

Dude you are golden for UOP. They LOVE the PAT, I only had 21 which is their average, so you are looking like a golden goose. Call them up, shoot the breeze with them and let them know you are interested in their school. Out of all the schools I spoke with over the phone and on interview day they were the most respectful and actually listened to me. Good Luck, if not UOP you are going somewhere.

Kahr how long did you study for? I'm in the process of studying myself and plan to take the exam in June.

Kahr how long did you study for? I'm in the process of studying myself and plan to take the exam in June.

Approximately 3 months (end of December to end of March). I did actually read through much of KBB prior to that, but as it's been said, if you study over too long a period you forget much of what you started with, and that's exactly what happened with the KBB material. Even the 3 months I spent was too long and required me to fastplay through many of Chad's videos and quizzes to re-learn Gen chem to a certain degree. I should also note that I put in probably 3-4 hours a day only, so if you can focus better than I could and still get adequate sleep, a more condensed time line like in dentalWorks's study plan is recommended.

Thank you again everyone for your kind comments. With regard to the DAT materials, I have come to a decision. I apologize to the many who contacted me to which I did not respond.

Just wanted to say thanks for the tip on reviewing those ch 18-21 notes. I had a question that was from there as well. But even though I actually read the chapters a couple weeks before and then reviewed the notes literally minutes before I walked into the testing center I'm still not sure if I got the question right. I knew the material but the wording of the question was kinda ambiguous. Thanks for some of your earlier bio posts too. You were kinda my go-to-person on where to focus my bio studying. I disagree with you on destroyer bio though. I had a lot of questions that i knew because of destroyer and one question that I would never had known the answer to in a million years if it wasnt for destroyer.

Also, I think you underestimate how impressive that 27 PAT is. Youve got some seriously good writing skills too so im pretty sure your PS is gonna be gold. Anyway, good luck and maybe i'll see you at those UoP interviews 😀

Glad I could be of help, and again, congrats on your own scores, they are quite overwhelming. If I do see you at UoP, I'll feel even more lucky considering your scores, but thanks for the compliments either way.

Regarding Destroyer Bio, it's not so much that I think it's completely useless, but that if you have a tight timetable to work with, it would definitely take a backseat to other material available. I'm happy it got you through one of those nasty random questions though.

hey this is the first im hearing about a 2009 ADA paid test?? i'm looking for it online but cant find anything :/... you mind sending the link 🙂

With destroyer Bio.... your going to get 50/50 responses. Some swear by it, others (such as myself) didn't find it helpful.

This leads me to conclude that it depends on exam version. But I do agree with Kahr that it shouldn't be a primary biology source.

**EDIT**
dang it Kahr... showing off that big-ole avatar !!!!

Ahaha, I honestly only did that because of the whole April's Fools day shenanigans that were going on all over the site (much of which was in the Lounge though)! (I have no doubt you saw all those weird pictures right after you made a post) *prods dentalWorks into making a donation!* I kid, you donate much more than money to this site, and you have to know we all appreciate your time.
