when to withdraw from accepted schools?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
May 15th is on a Sunday - do we email our fu$k you! letters on friday or can it wait till sunday?

I would imagine you could wait until 11:59 pm on Sunday night to do so.

What are you waiting for? If you've made up your mind just do it now.

Come on man people are waiting for those spots and the wait can be painful and unpleasant. You already know where you want to go so withdraw from the schools you don't want to go to today.

Wow...op is an ass...great to see individuals of that calibre getting accepted to multiple schools.

If you won't do it for your future colleagues, do it for the admissions officers who are losing sleep and suffering indigestion over the numerous offers on the table.

why would I ever want to do that when the majority of schools are not transparent at all about their admissions decisions.

one school - "we'll contact you in 4 weeks to let you know whether you've been accepted, waitlisted, or rejected". It took them 10+ weeks to decide. F*&K that!

Very few of the admissions departments I've dealt with actually seem deserving of this sort of consideration. There are a few well run gems, for sure, but there are also a great many that don't show the slightest hint of ever having once considered that maybe they should show any sort of consideration to their applicants. You may work at one of the good ones, LizzyM, and so maybe your applicants would love to make your life easier. I suspect, however, that for the majority of applicants, the idea of watching the slack-jawed yokels in a few admissions departments dangle is pretty attractive.

You'll get more traction asking people to do it out of consideration for their fellow applicants, for whom they may actually hold some positive feelings.

this. Do it for your fellow applicants. But if holding on to acceptances inconvenienced admission officers and not students, then I'd encourage it. Adcoms fall into the same categories as trial lawyers (like John Edwards), and bankers, in terms of the respect they deserve (srs)

JE F Crist! LizzyM has donated probably thousands of hours of her time to this site to help us premeds out, and you have the audacity to insult her to her face, and say you derive pleasure from watching her and her collegues suffer? You sir, are what's wrong with this world.

I doubt it'll do anything, but I'ma report you, our communities most helpful member deserves far more respect than this.

Just messing around...hence the hyperbole. LizzyM is very helpful.

Strong WK though, brah.

LizzyM is very helpful, and clearly goes out of her way to provide excellent advice and perspective to the premeds on this forum. She seems like a lovely woman, and is certainly deserving of respect and kind treatment.

That said, a large number of the admissions departments I've interacted with treat their applicants with what can only be described as contempt. Even the mid-level, neither the best nor the worst, admissions departments seem best characterized by incompetence and lack of concern for the poor saps applying to their schools. Patel2 may have been thoughtless in his overly broad generalization, but to some extent he was just calling a spade a spade.

You better not wait until the last minute. If you do, and the offices don't process the withdrawal, you'll still be on the multiple acceptances big board. Your last school may have an automatic rescind policy and you'll be stuck with NO school by the end. lolz.

Who's saying anything face-to-face on message boards? Welcome to the internetz sir!

Confused?

So you are trying to punish the med schools that accepted you and the people on those waitlists?

Are you that vengeful? And toolish?

I think many of you severely overestimate how much an admissions office cares whether you go to their school or not. It's not like there isn't a line a mile long waiting with bated breath to snatch the opportunity if given the chance.

Yes, you may cause an expected annoyance for the 30 seconds it takes most schools to go down to the next number on their ranked waitlist and make a phone call/send an email, but you're surely causing one of your peers a lot more pain.

I honestly don't see the point in waiting it out if you 100% know. It's not like admins are taking your app photo to their bedside tables and praying to see you again in August. 🙄

I agree. No one gives a crap mizoodles, especially in this forum. Spread your drivel elsewhere.

Well, you see here, I'm asking when is the latest I can send in a rejection letter in case I decide to make a last-minute decision? Y U mad tho?

Oh gosh, this is awkward...

I've been doing that...😳

Way to give OP a straight answer, people! I am TORN between two schools and not rational enough to have my computerized T-chart make the decision for me. I searched for this information after a freakout just now and now on top of feeling silly I feel like a jerk for not having withdrawn already. awesome.

The contempt people are showing for those holding multiple spots this late aren't the ones who are still legitimately undecided still. We are upset at those who know 100% they will not attend a school yet retain their spot due to laziness/collecting trophies/etc

To answer your question though cloudy, I would suggest making a definitive decision on Friday. Since this year May 15th falls on a Sunday, I'd say making a decision over the weekend might have questionable results given people might not get to it until Monday the 16th.

I answered the OP right off the bat. Sheesh. 😛

Presumably, everyone else agrees with what I posted, so they felt no need to reiterate it and instead went on to berate the OP.

The deadline is technically the 16th since the 15th is a Sunday. An extra day...big deal.

Excellent, thanks. The link I included did not have that clarification.

No prob. The schools should really be more clear about these things.

(And just to be clear, you can still hang on to your waitlists...if you are holding out for them.)

Aw,
How can I be mad now? Mauberley, I went back and did notice that. I guess it was just squeezed in between all the other stuff 🙂 So Monday it is, I guess.

On another note, I made my decision tonight, and I think I just guaranteed myself 4 more years of high school. In the same city where I grew up/went to high school. Sigh. Sometimes being practical sucks.

Hope you're all jetting off to Cali for med school- think of me when you're o̶n̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶b̶e̶a̶c̶h̶ in the library. Your life isn't glamorous, but you've got me beat.

On another note, yay for the upcoming May 15th!

s/he clearly has ethical and moral issues.👎

Doesn't appear to have too much collaborative spirit, either. Good luck to his/her future classmates.

Looks like one slipped through the cracks. A real jerk is going to be let lose upon patients!

No offense but the lot of you don't seem to be the rosy alternatives either.

Oh please.

Option A: He is a jerk
Option B: He is a nice guy that likes to waste people's time on the internet and pretend he is a jerk.

Based on the evidence provided by his statements in this thread I feel able to judge.
