2 year air force scholarship

Anyone know anything about the 2 yr. AF scholarship. How competitive r they, how many do they give out? If ur already in dental school, what type of gap is necessary? Anyone with good info please chime in.

Statistics from last year (according to the man on the other end of the phone) was that there were 8 total 2yr scholarships given out last year. Not sure how many applied?

Last year we had 8 2-year scholarships. For FY 12 we will have 55 three-year scholarships and 9 4-year scholarships. We will not offer any two year scholarships this year. The goal is to try and have a steady influx of about 70-78 dentists per year. We are only allowed to bring a certain number on active duty each year. So, we will most likely only add 2-year scholarships when we need to tweak our accession numbers a bit, which is why we had a few last year.
 
Is it even worth it to apply for a 2 year scholarship? By the way I'm starting my second year of dental school this fall.

Interesting. That's not what my recruiter told me. He mentioned somethign about a possible 3 year "immediate start" program, which would cover 2 and a half years. Do you know anything about this? Thanks

Not in the USAF. I won't say it's 100% not going to happen, but it never has and I wouldn't expect it to.

Are you say for the up coming fiscal year that they aren't going to give any 2 yr scholarships out or the current fiscal year?

Right now, there is not plan to offer them in either fiscal year. The AF can only bring a certain number of people on active duty during a fiscal year. The dental service has a limit. If we see that we are below that limit, some 2-year scholarships can be given to get that number to our limit. If we are already at our number, we cannot give out scholarships that will affect that number. We have to project in advance since the people receiving them will graduate in 2 years.

How do we get below out limit you may ask. Simple, someone turns down a scholarship and it goes unfilled (very rare), or someone with a 3 or 4 years scholarship loses the scholarship for one reason or another (also rare, but has happened). We will then be able to project that we will be below our number and can offer different scholarships. We can also modify the number scholarships if we have more people separate or retire from active duty.

So, 2 year scholarships are rare. I just talked to our scholarship office in the last 2 weeks and was told there is no plan for 2 year scholarships at this point. That may change, but I wouldn't bet on it. In other words, don't turn down a scholarship offer waiting for a 2 -year scholarship that my never be offered.

The only reason why I ask is that a 3rd yr student below me was given a 2 yr AF scholarship for this fiscal yr. So, I do know at least one has been given out.

Correct. a few were given last fiscal year for this school year. But none are planned to be awarded this year.

See my post above. That person was probably awarded one of the 8 that was awarded last year, for this school year.

Do you know if AF gives out 2 yr scholarship next year (for 2013-2014, 2014-2015)?

If yes, how early do you think I should get all the paper work and apply?

There are only 9 four year scholarships? Wow, that is competitive. How are selections made? Using gpa and dat like a dental school's admission's board?
 
Yes. There are also questions that you have to write responses to that they look at, as well as an interview. It is highly competitive. Hoping for good news in these next few weeks!

I was awarded one of the few 4-year scholarships year before last and am almost done with my 2nd year of dental school. I can give you some insight on what it's like to apply for the HPSP and what it's like in school on the scholarship. Beyond that, check back in a few more years!
