UoP "7 to 8 weeks to review"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's been more than 8 weeks since the last status update. Should I call them and see what's going on? 🙁

I'm going to be hitting 8 weeks tomorrow. I looked up previous posts regarding this from 2009, and apparently it's an estimated review time. There were a quite a few people who received invites around the 11 week mark. I don't blame you for being so antsy...I am too, I check it my status every hour haha!

I've decided not to push the envelope though and ask them what's going on, because I'm trying for the military scholarship, which for some reason won't give me a 3-year scholarship.

Army will do HPSP for three years at UoP. You can't take the 20K enlistment bonus though because that locks you into a four year commitment.

I'm going for the Navy. At least the recruiter from my region can't lock up a 3-year for anyone.

I have heard the 3 year UoP option isn't offered for Navy/AF. Did you check with any current UoP HPSP students? Recruiters can be shady/misinformed a lot of the time.

I will hit the 8th week on 10/27...
They probably passed on me...

My recruiter said he could pull some strings if UOP became a serious consideration. However, with 10 other interviews (including another CA school) and just an urge to get the military scholarship because I love the navy, I am not going to push it. I'd love to attend a Pacific interview, and if that happens then we will talk.

Interesting... well I think legally they can't tell/influence where you go. But you have a good point, unless you land the UoP interview all this thought is pointless so minus well save it for later haha. GL with HPSP

The Navy dude told me that 2 years ago, they offered the 3-yr scholarship but since last year they stopped. He said they won't this year either because they have enough dentists entering the Navy in 2015 and are looking for ones for 2016. Navy is so much better than Army. Army uniforms look like one's playing paint ball lol. Is that true about the sign-on bonus not being available for the 3-yr scholarship by the Army?

It's available, but by signing it, it locks you into four years of payback.

Hmmmm, is that worth it... to receive $20K now but have to serve an extra year in the Army vs. not taking the $20K but serving only 3 years? I'm not sure which I would choose. $20K is a lot of extra cash for an incoming dental student.

Look at it two ways:

20K up front helps you as a dental student no doubt, you will be stretched financially. Also if you want to stay in the military for life or until retirement benefits, might as well take this.

one less year of service with the shorter scholarship, add an extra year onto your private practice time. At the end of your career, that could be a lot of money. But, you'll have a bit of debt (first year).

It could go both ways. In either case the sign on bonus should not be the main reason for joining.

I don't think its worth it (at least financial) to take the 20K for a 3 year scholarship. Better alternative is to join USAA after you start as LT. USAA offers a 20K loan for like 3% interest or something. Take that and use it to cover whatever costs or live more comfortably. This way you won't lose out on an extra 60K while you're paying back the army versus working private practice. Unless, as dantemac says, you're going to make a career out of the military, then go for it.

Or another way to look at it (for non lifelong career in military):

No sign-on bonus means you work 1 year earlier in private practice and say you earn $100K that first year. That equates to a net benefit of $80K.

Taking the sign on bonus means you'll earn the officer's pay during that extra year (~$55K) plus housing allowance (~$20K). That equates to a total net benefit of $95K.

Compensation-wise the latter option compensates a little more assuming you earn about $100K in your first year out of dschool in civilian dentistry. But the main difference is having a civilian life one year earlier vs. $20K extra cash for dschool.

"Review, No decision"
"Re-review in January"

U of P!!

What does this mean?? Is this a postponed rejection or a serious potential at an interview??

Thanks

My application was under review for longer than 8 weeks (probably about 10-11) and I got a call two days ago for an interview (in January). So don't lose hope! However, I am also applying for the Navy HPSP scholarship and my recruiter (a medical recruiter, not a general one) also told me that they aren't offering the HPSP for UoP. So we'll see what happens in December and I'll have to make a decision whether to go to the interview or not...

+1...obviously this isn't an ideal response but are others getting rejections?

I believe...and this is me going way out on a limb...that it means:

1) They reviewed your application
2) No decision was made yes or no
3) They will re-review your application in January when the pre-dec interviewers make a decision

Hi. I also got this and I know for a fact that UOP does not send out rejectionos. i have been told numerous times by many adcoms there that they send a letter around March/April to those who get " rejected" saying something along the lines of " we are very sorry but the space in our class has filled up." So no one should expect a rejection from UOP now even if they are rejected. Naturally, this doesn't make me feel too good either. However, I do think that they are just waiting to see who will accept their offer etc come Dec.1st. I have been told by adcoms and students there that they do another huge wave of interviews after December too. Good luck to everyone!

Got the same... makes me wonder how they decide who to give an interview to (beyond that very early first group), especially when you can compare stats of those with and without. 😎

Brilliant! I love how people take the "re-review" and scrutinize it. WHAT DOES IT MEANNNN!!!!!

I talked to a few people from last year cycle. They got the same "re-review mid/end January" status around this time and a few of them got invited for the interview in Feb/Mar, but only for an alternate spot. In addition, UOP doesn't have a waiting list system like UCSF...so it is hard to tell even if you make it to the alternate list.

but if you are on the waitlist, the chance of you getting in the following cycle is pretty much a spot.
