Depends on the subject though.
I absolutely cannot listen to music while trying to study for a biology course, but I cannot be in a dead silent library trying to do chemistry or math, I would need music (film score, no lyrical music).

To those who use textbooks:
Are you required to do the textbook readings (i.e. you're going to be tested on the textbook material) or you do it by choice to complement your lecture notes?
Do you find that reading the textbook gives you a competitive edge and helps boost your grade?

Either it can boost your grade or waste your time. You gotta figure out the professor's testing style.
My chemistry teacher is lazy when it comes to giving homework so we are forced to use this horrid program called masteringchemistry...I have to be home to do the questions and study
I like to be in my room but I like the noise from people talking on the TV; I would usually put it on 'First 48' or something like that. What's weird is that if people are actually in the room talking it's distracting, and so is music. LOL. I'm so weird!

Urgh. I had mastering bio and mastering chemistry. I have webassign for physics right now. I dislike online homework.

Wow, I picked the exact same choices. Go figure!
Not possible for me to do it. I reported it to see if someone else has the power to change it.Another option: blocking access to addicting websites (e.g. SDN)
MODS: how do you edit a poll. If possible, add the above option.
1. Anyone have any opinions/experience on whether it's easier to memorize facts from notes on computer or printed notes (although I guess it depends on the person...)?
2. Anyone find printed notes a huge benefit by deterring you from surfing the web instead of studying?
3. I've always been lazy when it came to reading textbooks-how many people take notes vs. read once through material just to get a better understanding? Overall, has it benefited you?
4. When studying on the computer, how do you stay focused and avoid logging onto SDN every 2-3 mins?

Whenever I found myself on SDN when I should have been studying, I looked for one of those "what are my chances?" posts with somebody with a 2.8 gpa and a 23 mcat. I soon realized that the more time I spend on SDN, the more likely it became that I would be THAT GUY when it was time to apply, and that helped me log off SDN to study.
Since this poll is getting a lot of replies, I thought of a few more options that would be interesting to see the statistics for:
-Blocking access to certain websites or turning off the internet
-Drinking coffee or another caffeinated drink
-Splitting time between different subjects

I've tried this and gave my brother the internet security password. After 2 days I ended up begging him for the password back like a toothless crack fiend.
I use a site blocker app on Chrome, which allows me a total of 30mn on SDN, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr all that crap total per day. The bad thing is I have it on both my laptop and home computer so it turns into an hour total and I have it not block stuff from 12-6am. So I end up losing sleep (like right now...).
Addict much? Yes, yes I am.
I picked 1,2,4,5,6,7. I'll take anything but people moving around and talking.

Play "Eye of the Tiger", punch the air a few times, sit down, wait for the motivation to kick in, attempt to study, but fail as I "accidentally" open facebook, youtube, google, etc.

I think that if I had a tweed jacket with PhD patches and an oxford/cambridge style library I could improve my study efficiency and pleasure.
Open Itunes or Pandora and get to work, unless Im reading from a textbook, then I prefer silence or maybe some soft instrumental music in the background.
Anything to cover the annoying bark of my roommates puppy.
Films score work best.
Inspirational, instrumental, and not lyrical.

I listen to a lot more progressive/psychedelic rock, M83, God is an Astronaut, Pink Floyd, Washed Out, etc.
Film scores are great too.
Listening to music + In my room + With textbooks 🙂
What about class notes??
