What?! SDN is merging with NARF? That is like the NFL merging with the Lingerie Football League. We pride ourselves on evidence-based, science-derived health profession education and now we are being comingled with voodoo "professions" like chiropractic, Naturopathic and "alternative" healing arts.

SDN has betrayed us all. Time to start a new student forum.

I personally am thrilled about this invaluable opportunity to learn more about placentaphagy.

You all should really be more open-minded. Do you REALLY think evidence based medicine has ALL the answers? You DO realize your education is bought and paid for by the drug companies, right?

Drug companies are my friends.

Anyone know what MCAT and GPA you need to get into an ND school? I heard you need at least 15 and 2.5, but that seems awfully high :scared:

Also, do homeopathy schools look at the PS section score? I mean, it's pretty much trash considering that the only way to get dilution questions correct is to say that more concentrated solutions make things stronger, but we all know that couldn't possibly be farther from the truth. Anyone vaguely familiar with homeopathic science knows that the greater the dilution, the more potent the magi-I mean effect.

Even if we don't agree with the principles of naturopathy and complementary medicine, it's important to understand and acknowledge it. I went a lecture given by a gastroenterologist who claimed that a large number of patients with cancer will at some point turn to alternative medicine. If physicians treat the subject with ridicule, patients will be less willing to confide in them about the alternative medicine treatments they are seeking, and withhold information critical to their medical treatment. Just my two cents.

I love NFL and the Lingerie Football League (so awesome) so I refute your poor comparison. Let's see how the merger turns out. Honestly, I believe SDN will benefit a lot from the merge

While I am sure there are some successes with naturopathy, my experience to this point has been negative. Had an early 30's female come in with a breast that was like a rock with hard, matted lymph nodes. The patient had obviously known about this but was being treated by a naturopath. She became concerned when her breast started to become necrotic. Hard to say who is really at fault, in the end it is the patient's decision. However, in speaking to her she was given very biased information by the naturopath.

The fact that the naturopath did not refer her to a real physician shows negligence on his part.

And this is why "alternative" medicine isn't actually funny, even though a lot of CAM is (I will defend to the death my right to laugh at iridology).

Probably should wait until April 1 to pull an April Fools Joke, just sayin.

Meh, obvious April Fool's joke is obvious.

Don't be so closed minded. It nearly wiped out the human race by an explosion of time and anti-time until Picard realized the paradox.

Besides, can you remove the dark lord's magic and restore health? Don't be greedy and close minded. It is what led men astray.

This.... is.... epic.....

Pre-ND's are going to get dogged so hard on here. I almost hope this it true.

Is there an ND/PhD program somewhere?

While the timing may have been a little unfortunate(lol), this merger has been in the works for a long time. While we understand that not everyone agrees with all of the CAM views represented by the new forums, we thought it was important to give them a voice on SDN. It may take some time for all the CAM students to transition over to SDN but hopefully they can provide some much needed perspective on CAM, something that is slandered quite heavily on SDN from what I have seen.

Well, now I feel like an idiot. It's either a sick joke or Jenny McCarthy is now a senior mod on SDN.

The new mods are senior members from NARF who volunteered to become help support the transition(and future!) to SDN. Hopefully you will find them valuable resources to learn from.

Good thing they started by slandering MD /DOs

Vaccines = poison and medical doctors = fake.. Etc.

Did they tell you to say that? What are your personal thoughts on the matter?

edit: have you ever eaten placenta fried rice?

Oh my.

Granted this a joke....but some herbs do have reproducible double blind randomized control trials backing their efficacy. Just sayin...

Meanwhile there is big pharm drugs being used for purposes where there is no data.

I am all for using what data supports, whether it be from some plant or a lab.

Bad things would happen...to my career and learning if this was true. I don't think I would get anything done in the real world. Though, I was kind of excited for a second at the prospect of endlessly debating homeopaths.

You DO realize your education is bought and paid for by the drug companies, right?

So you're saying that the drug companies are bigger "scamsters" than the naturopaths? That makes perfect sense...

I just hope that the allo kids don't run out the naturopaths. Expect lots of flame wars to be popping up soon though b/w them. On the bright side, it'll be an endless source of comedy 🙂

I saw that, instantly I reacted exactly like this

whoa is this for real actually happening? I was definitely on the April Fools Day train until Tots came about saying it was serious. NARF? Really? Narf? Seriously? Narf?

narf?

 I was not forced to say that. Those comments represent my personal thoughts on the issue. I'll admit that I am not the biggest supporter of CAM but my best friend is going to ND school next year so I am excited to learn more. I think with the changes coming to healthcare, there will only be more opportunities for CAM providers to work with MDs/DOs so I am interested to learn more.

edit: have you ever eaten had placenta fried rice?

:barf: No and I hope I never do. I think the idea has been around for a LONG time though(I first heard about it with this hilarious article by Joel Stein: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1908442,00.html), on the TIME website there was a link on the growing movement from a 1933 issue of TIME(http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,753770,00.html). Interesting but I am not completely sold.

Yes many herbal products work for a variety of health needs. Without the FDA to interfere or the drug companies trying to promote their poison the herbal companies can focus on health and wellness! :luck:

Yay! Someone agrees with me that the merger was in fact legit! Although the influx of new mods somewhat scares me...

As someone working in pharma, I think your comments are quite simpleminded and obtuse, and are coming from a very nice stereotypicalized picture of the biomedical industry that you'll use as part of your scare tactics to make poor old grandma cough up money to pay y'all.

I had some respect for NDs before you posted that, but if this is really the attitude that all y'all share, then indeed the absolute lack of thought in your previous comment will now reflect in my absolute lack of respect for any future ND I encounter.

My $0.02?

Naturopathy is an archaic neolithic version of looking at disease which stems from two things a reactionary view that the past was much better than the future. On the other hand, biomedicine is what is going to create scientific breakthroughs that are going to change our world, and make life better for everyone. It's still in its early stages right now, but the future is bright for it. I bet 50 years from now we're going to look at naturopathy and compare it to phrenology.

I believe in not regeression, but progress:

Joke is in poor taste...Naturopaths can really hurt people and potentially bring on untimely death.
