'08 Application Vent Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The same thing happened to me. I called ETS and complained to real person and she sent out all of my scores again for free!

So - just call them! good luck.

I just wanted to remind everyone: Check your application status! For every school!
I checked with most of my schools today, and my number one choice was missing:
A recommendation
A scholarship form
AND MY FLIPPIN GRE SCORES!!!!!

wow, I HATE ETS. I took my GRE's in AUGUST!!! Is there someone I can call, and talk to rather than those stupid voice recordings? Or would it just be worthwhile for me to pay the money, and resend them. And if I do this, how long does it take for them to reach the school? ANY advice would be awesome right now, as I'm experiencing a small application meltdown, as I thought everything was done.

ugh! I sent a big fat packet with all my required documents to ASU. And it is saying that I am missing my transcript from my current school.

Hello...it is in the packet! I guess I need to call them in the morning.

I often use that phrase, and when people ask what it means, I just tell them to picture what it'd be like to be a Cat Wrangler!

-t

It really is!
I spoke with a professor at one of my schools last month and after telling him i would have 2 professors and my employer (clinical experience. private practice) write my LORs, he said I should include a third professor.
I asked one and she was quite willing and said it would be out the next week. It's a month later and I emailed her to ask if it was sent. No response for a week! I googled her name two days ago just to ensure she hadn't died or something. 😳
Thankfully I got her response today 🙂

I'm with you all on the cat wrangling! One of my professors didn't get a link to one of the online recs at her school account after multiple tries, so I tried sending it to her hotmail and called her asking me to let me know if it went through days ago. (It's already late, btw.) I didn't hear from her until just now letting me know that she can't check her hotmail 'cause her school is doing maintenance today so the network doesn't work. She doesn't have e-mail at home. I've also been freaking out about whether or not she mailed the paper ones, turns out she did it days ago and just didn't tell me - although I prefer that option over the alternatives.
One of my other recommenders very nicely next-day aired my written recs to me, since she slacked on getting them done before the last minute. They arrived yesterday, which is great, but with no signature across the seals! 😱 I'm still not sure what to do about it, which is bad since I want them out on Monday. She already showed me the rec, so it's less a confidentiality issue, than a I-don't-want-the-school-to-think-I-wrote-them-myself issue. I'm seriously considering getting a friend to forge initials - not a signature, but initials - across the seal in sharpie, so it's as reasonable as possible that it looks different from the inside signature. Highly questionable, but I just don't know what else to do. There really isn't time to send them back to her and then have her send them again. I know it's holiday and end-of-semester time for everyone so they're busy like mad - I say aarrrrrrrgh! anyway. Damn wrangling. Yippee ki yay, mother****ers.

Similar thing happened to me. One of my referees did sign the back of his envelopes, but with his talent, 80% of them look like they've been opened and resealed. What I'm thinking of doing is just attaching a note to the envelope saying that it came like that and I did not open it.

Seriously, what can we really do? The admissions people have to come across this quite a bit right...

I just realized that most schools get back to you around mid-March- which is spring break for me. So now my choice is: stay to stalk the mail box, or try to go visit my friends in miami and be a constant nervous wreck? lol.

I'm actually trying to not think about the process right now, as nothing is left that is in my control (all my apps are in, and I've checked on everything), so now all I have to do is wait-- err actually I signed up for a winter intersession class my school offers (it runs dec. 27- jan. 9), titled International Political Economy. I thought it would be a good distractor, but reading a book every four days starting last week, and writing a ton of papers, has just led me to more procrastination via SDN. (eh it's probably a good primer for how much work I will do in grad school)

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season!

I have had this happen to me several times. I usually contact the admissions assistant and ask them if it matters. I usually put it something like this,
"I just received my professor's letter and realized that they forgot to sign it. Shall I send it on as it is, or would your prefer me to contact the professor to see if they could send or fax a new one?"
I only offer this because I know any of my letter writers would be happy to send another letter if I asked them to. Most of them time, the admissions assistants don't care because it happens so often, they'll say something like, "I'll just make a note of it." Also, if they do request you acquire a replacement letter, usually, that means they have given you the green light to submit a letter late- so your application will usually be in the clear so long as you can supply them with the letter in a reasonable amount of time.

For anyone else who is away/with family for the holidays (ie: somewhere other than your home/dorm/apt)...are you paranoid about being away from your snail mail mailbox? I know that it's unlikely anything big or important is waiting for me but...I want to check it just to be safe!!!😛 Thank goodness for wifi, at least I can check my inbox obsessively!

Blindchaos,
It's almost waaay too early to be receiving anything via snail mail. Rejections don't usually come by letter until at least February. If a school wants to get ahold of you for an interview or something...they will usually email or call. Every once in a while, someone will receive an interview invite by mail, but this is pretty rare. The kinds of things you can receive in the mail now are notices from schools that you are missing a document (USC and Northwestern FSOM come to mind), or envelopes with financial aid information that graduate schools at some universities will send to everyone who submitted anything, even when you are not being considered as a serious candidate (George Washington coems to mind for this category). Check your inbox, but put your mailbox out of your mind. If anything comes to you while you are away, you will be able to deal with it when you go back.

What happens when your entire application is 99.9% complete. And not 100% because one LOR never made it, after all your heckling...

I know as of earlier this week it hadn't made it, and since the office won't be open tomorrow or tuesday (and the application deadline is the 1st!), I'll just be sitting on pins and needles praying it got sent...

I would just like to express my dislike of programs sending me a letter saying thank you for your application and the department will let me know....

come on. Don't get me all excited/worried for a non-event.

ahhh

haha agreed! and when they send you snail mail too--i got excited bc my dad told me i got something from such and such school and it turned out to be a holiday greeting card. bah.

So a while back I sent in an application to a school and only after it was all sent in, I noticed that I incorrectly spelled the name of the school once (left out one letter). I kinda freaked out b/c it's a bonehead mistake and I should have gone over the essay again to catch stuff like that (doh!). However, I got an e-mail a little while back saying the school was missing certain documents, including the essay with the error in it. I double checked with the school as I had sent everything together and it was tracked and signed for, but they seemed pretty darn sure that they didn't get a few documents so I sent them off again after I corrected my mistake. Whew!!!😛

sorry must get this out of my system

COULD SCHOOLS PLEASE LIST ALL APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS ON ONE PAGE (not program pages vs university admissions office pages, etc etc) IN AT LEAST SIZE 12 FONT IN A SENSIBLE MANNER!? I swear, this is a weed-out process.

i think fedex employees are going to get an extra christmas bonus based on the profits from my applications.

thanks for the 30sec vent🙂

1. I hope none of the hijackers are reading any of your applications rather than the graduate schools! 🙁 (see article) You may receive a call, but not from your school!

2. The FedEx employees will not be getting any bonuses since the companies insurance costs have now gone up (see article above). Don't worry, they will be passing the costs on to us!

I have everything mailed! Also, all my online stuff is done, except for University of Delaware, who I need to send me a link before I can send them my essays! I can't even believe it. I've been working on this process for so long I'd started to feel like the rest of my life was just going to be doing more and more applications. Now I need to get my head into a celebratory mode before I start stressing about hearing back from schools. :hardy:

yes. another email with a process update. Oh loyola how I woud love to attend thee, but please stop sending me emails lacking an interview invite or rejection.

Ohh, my favorite thing about the email was that we should hear from them by Jan 28th and interviews are on Feb 1st and 4th...huh? Time frame?

And I am starting to get really nervous about all this. I dream about getting in and then I wake up and am scared of not getting in anywhere. Ohhh, I want these next few months to pass quickly.

ets gripe: so today i find out from ets that i had two profiles in their system, one from when i took the general gres and one from when i took the subject gres. no one had bothered to tell me or merge them even though i've called them quite a few times. this meant that when i took the subject gres and sent all my scores to 4 schools for free, the schools only received the subject scores. which explains why 3 of my schools mysteriously didn't have my general gre scores. and then the ets guy who told me all this was horrible, telling me it is not in ets policy to ever resend scores (and if scores weren't received by a school, ets was not at fault but the postal system) and that even with this profile mix up, he wasn't sure that ets would resend my scores even though it was clearly ets at fault. the lady who talked to me after him was much better, and told me not only that ets does resend scores but that they would be sure to resend mine to those 4 schools. i wish that guy had asked me to do a customer survey on him-- if only he hadn't hung up on me (yes he hung up on me. bastard).

also i find out a school i had sent my scores to last year, when i took my general gres, threw them away because they weren't used for the then current application cycle. i can understand if they didn't want to carry years old scores but one year? i was kind of annoyed by that too.

my coworkers who have also applied this year and I decided that it was far too early to start worrying about not getting interviews and we set the date that we are allowed to start obsessing at jan 23. but when i check the interview invite thread and people are getting interviews to schools whose deadlines were dec 15th (like most of ours) im starting to get so anxious, i can't think of anything else. this is terrible!

oh man i'm in the same place. it sucks!!!

I'm obsessing now that one of the schools I applied to is on the list and I haven't heard a peep 🙁

Other vent: I hate it when I get an e-mail from a program that starts out "I am pleased to inform you..." and it turns out that they're just letting my know my application is complete and has been passed on to the admissions committee. GRRRR!

i wish that guy had asked me to do a customer survey on him-- if only he hadn't hung up on me (yes he hung up on me. bastard).

HA! I've had them hang up on me multiple times lol. And not because I was getting pissy either. Just cause they didn't know how to answer my questions or because they (ETS) had done something wrong. A few times I got the 'I'll transfer you to my supervisor' statement which turned into an 'oops, sorry'. A couple other times it was a blatent hang up. One guy in the disability centre (ahem, Charlie) has done this at least 3 times to me. I HATE ETS! (hmmm, sorry, I'm a little bitter).

So I XPressPost'ed my last application this morning (which is due on Tuesday and should arrive-- you guessed it-- on Tuesday...). Did anyone else begin preparing with plenty of time but still end up using priority mail one or two days before the deadlines? I had such a hard time mailing these things off... I must have spent hours changing tiny little minute details in my SOPs the day before applications were due.

Time to celebrate! (And continue to check the interview thread obsessively.) Good luck everyone!

Out of 10 schools I sent 7 applications and I have 3 more to go. My latest deadline is february 15th.

ummm, i overnighted everything. For my December 1st deadlines I was at the post office on November 29th sending out about 6 applications and did not learn my lesson for my January 1st deadlines where I was at the post office on New Years Eve! Thankfully, the post office was not closed and I got everything out but what a heart attack it gave me!! I was also late in the game on sending out my GRE scores and my transcripts. Some of my schools did not even get my official GRE scores yet. So needless to say I really dropped the ball in applying. I am graduating a year early and I thought that applying to grad school was just like undergrad, boy was I wrong!!! Def. a lesson learned!! 😉

Ha. I found this forum last year, knowing that I would be applying this year. Wrote down all sorts of tips, including apply early and stay organized.

Psh. I'll use them if I ever get in and get to my internship year. I clearly didn't heed the advice this year!

Thankfully, I've got a lot of lat January/February deadlines. Two of my applications are done and have been forwarded to the department for review--several days early, wheewwww. In my defense, one had been done since DECEMBER for a January 1st deadline, but not a single one of my recommenders sent their letters in until close to Christmas, with one being AFTER January first! So much for me being early.

I have one more January 15th that I honestly don't even know why I'm applying to. 😕 Everything is there but my half of the application this time.

It's almost done...almost done...

Lol, I have 5 more to do for Tuesday (sent 2 already) and they'll all be in the mail on Monday by 2:00pm.

They are all in different stages of completion. I kind of get bored of doing one, or stuck on a question, and so I move on to another. Shouldn't be a big issue getting them all finished well being that I'm sending the same PS to each school (LOL J/K)!

Good luck to everyone who has Jan 15th deadlines. I still have two more to do after this (Feb 1st and Feb 15th). Glad they are spread out a bit 🙂

So ya...

Got my 4 applications done and sent yesterday (at UPS at 2pm, just like I said 😛) for the Jan 15th deadline.

UPS said that they will for sure be at each of these schools by 12:00 on Tuesday.

So, I'm up late because I had a nap today after staying up till a ridiculous hour getting these bloody things done. I then check the tracking codes to see where in Canada my packages are....

Low and behold... what do I find? 2 are DELAYED!!!! CRAP!!!

So now it's 5:30 in the morning and 2 of my applications are stuck in Vancouver. One has to go all the way to the other side of Canada, which is 4 hours ahead and the other to the middle of Canada which is 2 hours ahead. They are never going to get there today!

I seriously don't care if there are weather warnings. The weather looks just fine to me. I seriously don't care if they have to call in the military (hahaha, Canadian military 😆) to get them there.... just get them there!!!

The funny thing is, is that the 2 applications that are going to the Ontario schools arrived in Ontario just fine. Wouldn't it have been a smart idea to get the application that is going to eastern Canada to Ontario too (more than half way there), then ship it from Ontario when the 'weather' clears up???

OK. I'll end my vent here. The good news... I just called the school in eastern Canada and explained the situation, and the grad secretary laughed and said not to worry, that it'll still be reviewed. Glad for that, but it still looks bad 🙁

Is one of them to my school?

It won't be a problem, don't worry. Just call the psych office, they're all really nice there. Our DCT is up to her eyeballs in work right now so I'd be shocked if they looked at applications until a few weeks from now.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

Yes, one of them is your school.

You seriously don't know how relieved your post made me 🙂 I will definitely give them a call in a couple hours.

Now, honestly RD... since when is 2-5 cm of snow in your city classified as 'severe weather'? That's like rain in Vancouver for you eskimo people!

 I just got home from school and there's at least a foot of snow on the roads. I barely made it home. It doesn't help that drivers here are *****s. They're actually considering closing the University for a few days and some of our profs went home early. This would never happen in Winnipeg where we get four feet of snow and still go out for dinner.

How did the call go? I think it's probably Amy you'd speak with, she's my favourite person ever.

I actually just found out today that one of the people who reviews applications is out of town until Sunday so I think you're good. lol. Especially with this weather, the office is gonna be understanding.

I just submitted my very last application today! Woot woot!

But then........

I got a reply from a very nice professor from a school at which I would very much like to attend.

You see...I submitted an application on Dec. 15th when I had a very bad cold, and thought I had proofread my paper. On second glance about a week ago, I realized I had sent a personal statement with several duplicate sentences from copying/pasting/revising. I thought I should 'fess up and so I sent an email to my POI that I had made a mistake and that he could think of it however he wanted, but that I was sorry for the mixup.

He wrote back today and said, go ahead, and send on the revised version to me.

Really nice of him.

Now I have to make sure that the real thing is REALLY good. I can't mess this up again. So tonight I will be editing, even though I though I was done.

Almost done.

Woot.

Ugh, I am so glad I finished all my applications early. A lot of mine were due December 1st/5th so I just submitted all of my applications by that deadline. Unfortunately, this means I've been waiting for over a month and a half to hear back and have only heard about an interview from one school so far. Obvioulsy, it's still early, but it's just stressful!

Plus my transcripts didn't arrive on time at one of the schools I applied to and they kept telling me to contact different people so I didn't find out that they hadn't made it there until almost a month after the due date [yes, even though I had gotten everything else in at least 2 weeks before the deadline]. Soooo annoying. 🙁

It would be so much fun there right now!!! I miss having tons of snow. I was in Regina for 3 weeks over Christmas and it didn't even snow once. We had a few flakes here and there, but I was hoping for a good dump. Not happy.

The person I spoke with on the phone was really bitchy. She said 'oh, well I've received lots of applications today'. I was like, well UPS has kept mine in Vancouver, so you won't be getting it today (i said it a little nicer than this 😉. I asked if it would still be reviewed if it got there tomorrow, and she said that she thought so.

Think so eh?

Anyway, I'm sure it'll be just fine. I'm just a stress case right now. I'll phone early next week and make sure everything is ok. Glad the person who reviews them is going to be away 😀

That's so funny that the school might close for a couple days. They must be expecting more storms there or something. If you get the days off, make sure to relax a bit. How is this semester going for you anyway? Any better?

Feels good to be done eh? (Well pretty much done).

I still have two left to do but they aren't due till Feb 1 and 15th. I'm super relieved that the majority are behind me. And for you, after tonight, it's just the waiting game.

Ahhh, the waiting game... we know this part all tooo well 😱

I have to go into the office on Thursday so I'll ask Amy what happens to late applications.

Apparently they had a blizzard here last winter that shut the city down for about a week. But I'm a Winnipegger damn it, I'm still going grocery shopping tomorrow morning.

Unfortunately I don't have time to relax 'cause my courses and TA hours are out of control and I'm not even done my client reports from last semester. But my friend and I have plans this weekend to throw a WAIS party (where we drink wine and teach each other how to give intelligence tests which we have to do this semester) so that'll be fun.

This semester's better, I've applied for a new apartment (and hopefully will be moving March 1st) and am getting out of my lease. I'm selling all my furniture and starting fresh. I still have advisor issues but other than that I have all new profs this semester so life's good. Plus, my kitten's older now and he apparently has learned how to hunt bugs reaaaally well because I haven't seen any in weeks, I just see him chewing random things on the floor. 🙂

This waiting game is painful!!! Well, that and I'm impatient 😛 I keep looking at past interview invite threads to find out when some of my school extended interviews in previous years.

Ugh...I wish I was more paitent...and was more confident about the chances of it working out this time around.

Lol, me too. I just spent 45 minutes looking through last years invite thread.

I keep asking myself why I through away another $2000 when I could have spent that going back down to Australia.

Hopefully all of us second time around'ers will have better luck this year.

oh man, i'm in the same boat, i added last year's interview dates AND dates when people heard about interviews to my very large spreadsheet. It looks like next week SHOULD be the week, but I'm still freaking out now.
good luck to everyone!!!!

This whole process blows with teeth...

I hate this....at this point I'll take one interview... just one... combined with one acceptance only because I never E-V-E-R want to go through this again...

In the meantime I've booked myself a trip to St Thomas... I figured I deserved it... so did Visa.

I'm in a critical condition as well. Since the programs I am applying don't have interviews I will receive either an acceptance or rejection letter. I check my mailbox everyday. So far nothing. No news is good news though. 🙂

i keep on second guessing my statements - should i really have mentioned more than one poi? was explaining my current research illuminating my experience or just reiterating my cv? - etc., and on and on, since of course there is nothing i can do about them now.

it's fun!

freudismyfriend --- you can join my club then!! The same damn thing happened to me - they had my birthdate wrong and sent my subject scores to my schools and not my general scores! I didnt find that out until like 2 weeks ago and three of my schools already extended interviews but since my application was not complete due to the lack of official GRE scores I guess I just forfeited my admission!! I called ETS and asked to talk to the supervisor because they told me it would take 7 days for my files to be merged! 7 days!! Well the supervisor merged them in 30 minutes and my schools are just now getting my official scores from ETS. Thankfully most of my top choice schools had January deadlines so my scores wont be extremely late but still i was so pissed. I know exactly how you feel!!!!

i keep on second guessing my statements - should i really have mentioned more than one poi? was explaining my current research illuminating my experience or just reiterating my cv? - etc., and on and on, since of course there is nothing i can do about them now.

it's fun!

I hear ya! But alas- too late! Oh well...I am officially done with all of my applications, even re-sending statements to make up for the boo boos I made. It is kind of sick and wrong, but since Christmas I have been mulling over in my mind...I wonder if there are any other schools with really late deadlines...like February 1st...and I just hadn't discovered them yet...

Like I would actually put together a whole new application right now!!! What is wrong with me?

I think it's just the nervousness that 3 of my schools are already on the list...several of the others are ones that are really competitive and they're probably out of my league. Oh boy..........

I got a letter from a university saying that they didn't have the transcripts my college sent out on January 10th. I'm faxing over something they can have in the interim, but I'm terrified they're just going to pitch my application. UGH.

Immortalavalamp~ Don't fret my pet! The school wouldn't have notified you that you were missing them if they didn't intend for you to send them along. It's going to be all right. It's happened to me...oh...I don't know...probably like 8 times. Schools have so many other reasons to pitch one's application- transcripts is rarely one of them.

And can I just say, as an aside, on this vent thread...that I am SO relieved that there has been no action on the Interview Invite Thread in nearly 3 and 1/2 hours? I don't need all that anxiety hanging over my head all weekend long that all these people got invites to interviews and I didn't. Good riddance.

Agreed! Updating the list has become some sort of masochistic endeavor especially in the last couple of days with so many new schools being added. I don't mind updating it, I just kinda wish that I got to put up my own invite too. There's still lots of time (only 2 of my 14 schools are on the list - and one of those will be sending out invites for at least another month), but seeing all the invites come in without being able to contribute any info myself is kind of depressing 🙁

The uni. called me back. They found my transcripts! It's a huge relief--the Clinical secretary was very nice, but the graduate secretary made it sound as though all hope was lost. I'm just glad they were found.

I third the comments about the interview invites. I know it's early, but that doesn't make me any less nervous.

My grandmother asked me tonight, "So, can't you send all your schools a reminder or something? Why haven't they gotten back to you yet?"

None are even listed in the invite thread.

As if I'm not under enough pressure, now my grandmother's on my case. 🙁
