SOS to all the knowledgable Medical Students out there..

I am short 1 unit upper-divisional units. My undergrad will not let me graduate even though I've fulfilled all of their class requirements and total unit requirements. They want me to take a class here or at another University before they will graduate me. Should I tell the medical school I'm planning to go to next year? I do not plan on taking anything over the summer because I've already made a summer commitment to go overseas. It's just 1 unit... Will they really kick me out of medschool for it even if I try to make it up while I'm at my medical school? Please give me some sound advice, I look up to you guys..

At some point your medical school will ask for your transcripts this summer. I would think that they are very likely to kick you out for not getting your undergrad degree. If you are still set on going oversees, ask for a deferment.

For almost every med school acceptance, there is a condition that in order to keep it, you HAVE to graduate. Let your med school know what's going on, chances are you're going to have to cancel that overseas commitment and finish your undergrad. I would suggest seeing if you could work out an independent study thing or something with a professor.

can't you take an online course somewhere and earn a random credit

Cancel the overseas committment, finish up your degree over the summer, and go to med school as planned.

Here's what I would try to do....At my undergrad we had a course called "Internship in Biology". It was a three credit general 'course' that was basically a name for any significant experience about which you could write a paper and relate in some way to biology. I worked part-time in a hospital my senior year and kept a few journals of patient experiences and handed them in at the end of the semester - earned 3 A credits. However, I was going to use my experiences as a summer camp counselor as the basis of this paper and my course advisor was going to accept it!

Anyway, see if you can use this overseas travel as a 'learning experience' that you could write a paper about and turn it in at the end of the summer for 1 credit. You could ask that it be Pass/Fail. Make a formal proposal to your dean/academic advisor that your travels be a study in cultures, or make a visit to a couple of clinics during your travels and document their healthcare policies if it needs to be a science credit. If is isn't approved just try and sign-up for an on-line course or a correspondence course.

Take an online course like "medical terminology" or something like that. I took the in-class version (there was an online version though), and it really helped in understanding other coursework, journals, medical books, etc.

I'd hate to say it, but you must do ^^^ if you cant get the credit online or overseas or somewhere else.

Our Dean advised us ahead of time that every year there is at least 1 person who doesnt finish there degree requirements and has there acceptance taken away. Don't be that person! I doubt you will get any sympathy if you have to apply again next year and you will also have to explain to other schools why you did not attend a medical school which you were granted acceptance to already.

Best of luck regarding your situation, I hope you find a solution that lets you go overseas and finish your requirements.

Can't you just take a distance education class at your school? Most of the grad level classes at mine were all simultaneously available for interenet students. Take like a 2 unit course while your abroad, get a C if you don't give a care, well if its a grad course a B cause there are no C's, and move on in life. Talk to your advisor, I'm sure there is something that can be worked out. Oh yea, what about those indivdual research units? Maybe you could go to like the Policy, Planning, and Development department and see if you could swing some field research on health practices in where ever you're going to be. You can make this situation work to your benefit.

i know from experience that some medical schools admit students without undergraduate degrees. why don't you ask your school if the degree is an absolute requirement?

p diddy

most schools just require 90 units completed or something like that.

contact the medical school and see what their position is. If they require it, then drop the summer plans or look for a way to have that credit completed through other means listed above.

Dumbest thing is to lose your acceptance to med school over what I'm assuming is some summer travel plans.

I had to suck it up and take an extra class during the summer before med school. It sucked.
