1 year internship before residency?

can someone explain this for me? i read somewhere that after graduating DO u have to do 1 year of intership before ur specialty residency...


i.e. after graduating and wanting to go into EM, i'll have to do 1 year of intership THEN goto my 3 year EM residency??
