1 year MPH programs info?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
bu's is 1 year? i know it was 2 years when i applied, but that was a long time ago.
i think you can get through at tulane in 1.5 years, but i don't know if it's possible to shorten it to 1 year.
i know this doesn't help, but most 1 year programs are for physicians or other health care professionals.

Hey Dr. Don,

I researched this myself quite a bit - since I didn't want to do a full 2 year MPH, and I sure as hell didn't want to do a Physio program. Plus being that I'm a non-trad that wants to work with the underserved as a physician, the MPH degree just fits much better with my whole application. Dartmouth's is great in that its designed to be 1 year full-time (actually only 9 months - no summer stuff). Whereas at BU, I'm pretty sure you can get it done in 1.5 years only if you do everything at once, taking a full or even extra full load. Not sure if this matters to you. I think its a bit better at Dartmouth where all the other full-time students with me will be on the same timeline. Plus its a much smaller program - which I tend to favor. I'm not aware of any other one-year MPH programs that aren't geared soley to Health Professionals (i.e.- they don't have any pre-meds there). I'm not sure if Dartmouth is still accepting apps - but you could check. There number is 603-650-1782 and everyone there is super nice. Good luck man.

are you only interested in Public Health? THe reason I ask is that I have gotten letters from Finch and Drexel and Penn State inviting me to apply to their programs. They were not all public health but they were one year programs designed to help med school applications.

thanks for the info people. Yeah, Dartmouth's program seems like a great deal and BU's is 1 year if you really pack it all in, which I don't mind considering that I won't be working and I'll just be concentrating in school. shortstuff, I'm really interested in Public Health, because like texasguy, I also want to practice medicine in underserved communities, so that would be the best route for me. I have also received info from Finch regarding the 1 year physio programs, and although I do enjoy physiology, I just don't want to dedicate time and pay for a degree that will not be as useful for me in the long run. I'll rather do the MPH. thanks for the info people, and if anyone else knows of any other programs, please let me know, thank you.

Check with your state school(s) regarding MPH programs. They're much more affordable and may help you develop connections when it comes time to apply to med school. BU and Dartmouth are VERY expensive, although both excellent programs.

Have you considered picking up an MPH while in medical school? These programs are typically 4-5 years in length.

Feel free to PM me with questions. I will finish my MPH in August, and plan to apply to med school this summer.

Cheers,

PH

A few other notes about Dartmouth, they accept MCAT scores instead of GRE, and the class is made up of 1/3 physicians, 1/3 health professionals, and 1/3 pre-med. One cool part about the MPH is the field experience. The following link describes the experience, its not very easy to find on the regular Dartmouth website.

They have a ton of linkage with community health programs for underserved populations, refugees, veterans, etc. where you can focus your work on implementing things you've learned in the first two quarters of your MPH program. PM me if you want more specific info.

Johns Hopkins has a 1 year MPH program and also Masters in Health Science (MHS) in specific disciplines (epidemiology, molecular microbiology and immunology, health policy, biostats, biochemistry, international health, maternal and child health, environmental health and population and family health). The MPH is more broad and flexible than the MHS - MHS is much more focussed and you don't have as much time for electives. Depending on which department you chose it is 9 months - 2 years for the MHS. The molecular microbiology and immunology department and the biochemistry concentrations teach with a public health perspective, which I loved. Here are the links if you want to check out the school and the departments.
