Is there a scholarship program that would allow me to do just one or two years of GMO tour right after med school, and then get out? Would I have to do an internship year before GMO tour, and if so could i do both in two years?

Also, the reason I want to do a GMO tour is becasue I've heard it can be a unique and awesome experience. anyone have an opinion about this statement? And, if I do a GMO, do i get to pick the GMO tour? how difficult is it to obtain the GMO billet I want?

Thanks in advance

You'd have to at least do 3 years as a GMO

Yes

No, you'll have to be in at least 3 years total

I disagree, I don't like my job at all

You have little or no control over what GMO tour you get.

Spend some time readingthis forum and then ask quesitons if you have more.

I thought if you volunteer for flight or dive (3yr tour), you have a lot of control. If you take your chances with a ship vs. marines (2yr tour), then I thought it was a crap shoot.

To the O.P., everyone is tells me the old mythical one year GMO slots have gone the way of the dinosaur. Sorry.

For every person I've heard of or talked to that was able to have a high degree of choice in where they went, I've talked to a couple more people who were sent somewhere they didn't want to go, that wasn't on their dream sheet, or they thought they were going to a place they chose but had the rug pulled out from under them at the last second.

The Air Force at least seems to attempt to keep you by a certain location if you have a serious reason for it; i.e. a sick close family member or a dependent who requires specialized medical care. This requires documentation however.

This is very dependent on what service you are in. In the Army, you could certainly do an internship followed by a two-year GMO and then get out. Of course you will spend at least 12 months of that time in Iraq or Afghanistan. You could also get stopped lossed if your unit got deployed at the end of your 2 years. You can do a shorter GMO tour if you are accepted for Army GME. They will pull you right out of that job to complete your residency.

As for it being a great experience. I am residency trained, but in a GMO billet and I think it sucks.
