I was hoping all the SDNers out there could help me out. I wantto apply to about 10 dental schools, and I am not about to take any long shots. My states are as follows, undergraduate gpa 2.9, but, due to re-taking classes, it is around a 2.6 according to AADSAS. Alos, I have a 3.4 graduate gpa with a masters in biology. I have tons of shadowing experience, and I work in a pharmaceutical companywhich will help me in the reasearch category. MY DAT is not the greatest, 18AA, 17TS, 14 PAT. And, another fact to consider is that i live in pennsylvania, so I am not going to bother applying to any out of state public schools. That would be throwing money away. So, any information would really help me. Like I said, I paln to apply to around 10 schools, so please give me all the info you can, oh yeah, i almost forgot, i also have taken and passed the pennsyvnania oral radiology examn which allows me to legally take dwntla x rays

i would suggest that you retake the DAT and try to get 20+ on all the sections.

1. What is a bottom tier school?
2. Retake DAT to 20+

ok, dont tell them that... you have a 2.95 and you got in..
there is always hope.

A 3.4 grad GPA says a lot. But yes def retake DAT and do much better.

most schools will not accept a 14 in any section. Sorry for the bad news

here you go....maybe not "top 10 bottom tier schools"...but easiest to gain admittance.....

Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health
Howard University
University of Kentucky
University of Louisville
Louisiana State University
University of Missouri-Kansas City
University of Nevada, Las Vegas
New York University
Meharry Medical College
West Virginia University

do you think they are still the 10 easiest to get into considering I am a pennsylvania resident?

I only applied to one of these schools (NYU), so I can not claim to be an authority on their admissions criteria. Most of what I have heard may be only be considered hearsay, but Arizona and UNLV are very hard to gain admissions. I have heard horror stories from people I met at other interviews about the "inquisition" one faces at Arizona for their interview.

fine, take ASDOH out, and add boston...you're right

also - one more correction 👍 - University of Louisville have posted their STATS for 2005 on their webpage 🙂 :

about 3.5 overal :scared:
and 3.35 science 😀

it's getting competitive guys! :scared:

check it out for yourself (might wanna remove that from the 'list') 😳

of course...... i just thought of 10 names that I remembered were pretty lax when I applied in 2004 for the 2005 cycle (which means I was looking at 2003 stats).....can anyone else come up with a list? just trying to help

it's not your fault 😳 in the previous post, i was just trying to make a point that it's getting competitive (the averages are rising every year - along with the number of students applying)

check out the adea.org website, then click on AADSAS (in the center), then click the link to 'Health Professions Advisors', then check out introducing AADSAS 2006 (it's a power point presentation) - look at the second slide to see the trend in number of acceptances and number of applicants - ITS ON THE RISE :scared:

True that it doesn't take superior stats to gain admittance (3.45 and 17s are average), but 600 interviews for 54 spots isn't too great a shot.

Hey, Gavin - I don't quite agree with you there - "600 interviews for 54 spots" - those 600 people probably got interviewed somewhere else too, and decided to turn their acceptance down at this particular school - do you see what i'm saying?

600 - 54 = 546 (are you telling me that 546 people that were interviewed did not get into dental school - absolutely not)

Most (certainly not all) of those 546 probably got interviewed somewhere else and decided to 'accept' acceptance there

Does that make sense?

All in all - about 9500 people apply for a little over 4000 spots

However - these were lasts years numbers - I expect around 12000 applicants this year - THAT'S ONLY MY OPINION - SO DON'T TAKE IT AS A FACT OR ANYTHING!

Wow, your GPA is awesome. How come you didn't do well on your first DAT?

Doesn't matter. We're referring to specific schools. Last year Arizona had 2100 secondary applications completed, sent out 600 or so interviews, and has a class size of 54 (with roughly 80-100 acceptances for those 54 seats).

I have to say that the PAT section tests the most important skills needed for dentistry. And the bad thing is that it's not something you can really study for as easily as biology, etc.

I would disagree with UMKC. Its stats appear to be relatively easy, but it is a state school. If you are not from Missouri, Kansas or a WICHE state, it will be extremely difficult to gain admission.

To the OP: the old rule of thumb is that the private schools are the easiest to get into. I do not think that this is always the case...but I think that it is an better guide than trying to foresee a school's stats based on "older" stats.

It's not easy to gain admission to UNLV if you are an out of stater. In 2003, 1600 out of staters shoot for 35 spots, this year, around 2000 out of staters.
Nevertheless, if you are instate, this is a complete joke.

Can someone close this thread, what a handjob 🙂

Not true! Maybe the PAT, but I got a 14 in Math and was admitted to 3 schools. I know one guy who got in this year with a 13 Math 🙂 you never know do you.

This is why I said "most" schools. Most of the schools that I applied to had a cut off line, and you would not have gained admission with a 14 or 13. I guess UNLV does not have a cut off.

wow, NYU is one of the easier to get into????
where do you get your rankings from?

and how does the rank of your dental school affect how you will fare in getting a job(for example i thought most patients in nyc area would be impressed by nyu) and a residensy if you decide to go on to that?

Although unbelievable that such a studious and intelligent person wouldnt study for something so important, yes, he told me he didnt even crack open a practice test....he took it bare-naked. 16/16 without even seeing the test in my opinion is genius!! You da man! LOL  oh and nice work on the summa cum laude double major! Holla at me  👍

Yeah. It's getting competitive overall for all dental schools.

I would say NYU is probably the most talked about dental school on SDN. There is all sorts of idiosyncracies attached to NYU. I don't even know where to begin. Do a search and you will know more about then you ever want to know. Oh, yeah, the admission officer there is called Amy Knowle. (I need to put that in for the rhyme, you know!)

Neither does Marquette, Indiana, Temple, Nova, Case, Dalhousie, probably more I just don't know. You are right some schools have a cutoff at 15, but most have a cutoff at 14 or even 13.

i disagree with karyokinesis about an outerstater applying to Louisiana State University Dental. the school accepts 60 students per year. of this 60, 51 are Louisiana residents, 4 are from Arkansas, and 5 are from any other state besides Louisiana or Arkansas.

LSU average gpa is 3.6
avg DAT is 18.7
will not be accepted to LSU Dental with lower than 17 in PAT.
