10 Unfilled Ortho Spots in the Midwest

I think that at least 8 of the unfilled positions in the midwest is due to the current state of the Wayne State University/Detroit Medical Center program (8 residents a year). There is controversy as to what is really happening, but I met two WSU students on the interview trail this year and one said that the program is officially gone (40 residents SOL) and the other said that there is some turmoil and isn't sure what's going to happen. Several of us (look at Orthogate forums) agree that 8 of the unfilled are because of this.

The department is just going through some political sorting process, they kept the residents that were in the program before, and most likely will be back on track next year with match participation. The school is supportive of residents, but not the ousted heads of the department 🙄 Of course, should residents have to change spots - they are not bound by the quota agreements and can join programs that would otherwise (based on match quota) be filled 😍 .
To answer your earlier question about whether these positions are reflected in the total... when Maricopa County's program folded last year, their 3 positions were included in the total unmatched total (even though they didn't interview, I believe).Spittz03 said:
The important numbers are how many applied and how many matched. That's what makes a specialty competitive. Even if Ortho did have 10 unfilled spots (which they didn't), you have to look at how many people were fighting for those spots. Gen surg can fill all the way up with IMGs, and go way down on a rank list. This doesn't typically happen in ortho.

Last year in the Ortho Match there was a total of 6 spots unfilled, 4 of them from Marsicopa which did not even interview. The other 2 spots was from Monminide medical center in N.Y and UVA 6 yr spot. What usually happens in the ortho match is that most programs will interview 10 per spot, so 4 spots = about 40 interviews or so, then the committee makes a decision on the rank list. But the thing is that most program do NOT rank everyone that they interview. I know that UVA only ranks about half of the interviewees, about 20 or so. They have figured out from previous years that there is a certain number that they never fall below..... however this is not perfect, and that is why you get the unfilled spots. Programs gets a little cocky, ranks only 15 for 3 spots, and did not expect to go below 10..... then they go unmatched for 1 of the 3 spots. At UVA, the chairman ranked less than 10 people for the 3 research spot..... I know this because one of my best friends is a ortho resident there and he is in the 6 yr program. Our school had a guy that went unmatched and he spoke with the Chair and the PD during the week to see if he can get that spot, the chair said NO, and UVA left the spot unfilled. So that is somewhat of an inside story. So having 10 unfilled spots does not mean less competitive..... plus from talking with the UVA res coord last year, when that spot opened up, she received a few hundred apps in the matter of a couple of hours from email/fax/phone call, etc for that single spot. So scrambling for a spot is as competitive or maybe more so than actually matching.
