hey guys im going to be entering pharmacy school as a p1 this year and ive seen a lot of posts about these summer internships that the large chains have for students. so are these not actually working in the pharmacy for 10 weeks? you do projects and stuff? also do they retain you after the 10 weeks and let you work some weekends during the school year and the next summer as well? also are they full time?

This depends on the company. Walmart for example you work as an intern for 10 weeks in the pharmacy. However you do partake in extracurricular activities with your DM usually once a week. As well as ride alongs with the DM.

If you are good, they will offer you to stay on board and work once a week or once QOW. Or if you don't feel like you can handle it then you can just wait and work the following summer.

I wasnt able to get an internship until in between my p1 and p2 year. I worked as a tech, for the most part. Did some special tasks, did some inventories. My "project" was to get as many people to donate to the ALS foundation. I filled up the wall with donation cutouts. /oh yeah

did they let you work during the academic year?

Yes, they had you work 8 hours/month to maintain your status. I never signed up for any and got another internship elsewhere.

Walmart will let you go on academic leave until next summer if you wish. Not sure about others.

do they at least expand your job duties to counseling when you have the knowledge?

Under pharmacist supervision.

You do everything except visual, and immunize in my state. I think some states let interns immunize if they have had training.

I did targets internship last summer. The focus was on pharmacy management. I spent about 60% of my time working in the pharmacy as a tech with extra responsibility (monitoring metrics, being a team lead, counseling, Dr calls, drug info questions etc.) And 40% in management meetings, working on a project, and training. As long as you do a good job, they'll offer you a casual position during the school year (no minimum hours requirement, usually do about 16 a month). They may also invite you back for an "advanced" internship the following summer. I thought it was a great experience and worth pursuing. Not sure if experiences vary by location but mine was in the Philly area.

hey guys, i am going to be a p1 at the end of the month and I dropped off a resume to target for a pharm tech/intern spot about a month. they emailed me back a month ago telling me to apply online specifically for their store location and that they wanted to set up an interview. their application didn't work properly and was down, so they told me they would see what as going on. a month later (now), i emailed them again and the application worked, and they said the HR will call me for an interview for their intern spot, not a tech, because I'll have an intern license by the time i start.

it seems like they need to hire more staff because i was able to email a month later and they still want to interview me. my question is, at target, am I going to be interviewed by people at HR and get questions that have nothing to do with the job? or am i gonna interview with the pharmacist and actually get questions about my experience and about the intern position? ive been reading that a lot of interviews for techs at target are more situational based, but shouldnt it be different for an intern? why would HR interview me for an intern position?

You'll be interviewed by HR as well as pharmacy staff. My experience was an initial phone interview with HR followed by a face-to-face interview with the pharmacy DM and the store general manager. Most of the questions were your standard interview questions with a focus on managing a team. As far as needing people goes - they hire all year for the summer internship and they don't seem to be in a hurry to fill all the positions as soon as possible - quality over quantity. This possibly explains why the long process.
