Having a lot of non-medical experience won't hurt you.

However, make sure that you are doing something pertaining to medicine/clinical during your gap year(s).
 
A couple of people I know said that the excessive non-medical experience can all hurt me, which is why I ask this question now. Still a red flag?
No.
It just raises eyebrows if you go a year or two without clinical experience when you supposedly want to go into medicine.
It would more than raise my eyebrows. I would be concerned.
