Haha I was talking to some friends about this the other day.

Don't give toothpaste, I feel the eggers will be a'comin!

What if you gave candy and toothpaste/toothbrush in a little goodie bag? Best of both worlds!

We participated in the truck or treats at work last year. Instead of candy I went to the party store and loaded up on a ton of the cheap $.10-$.25 plastic toys (rings, notebooks, whistles, magnifying classes, mirrors, bubbles, etc.). You'd be surprised how much you can find there. Discounts for bulk buying. Gave that out - kids loved it. (otherwise, you could always go the sugar-free option).

Give out xylitol sweetened candy. Not only will they not cause cavities, but you'll be doing their oral health a favor.

EDIT: As you mentioned it can upset your lower half because of its antibacterial effect, but for most people its negligible.

Hey guys

This is the first Halloween I'm living by myself and dealing with Trick-or-Treaters coming to my door. My apartment is on a relatively busy street, and my town is crawling with kids. As a future dentist, is it morally reprehensible to pass out dental caries in little wrappers and compromise the oral health of the future generation? Should I be "that guy" that gives out toothpaste, thereby saving the kids from future years of pain and expensive dental care? Should I dress up as a toothbrush? Should I buy copious amounts of candy, only to eat it all myself?

Opinions are welcome

Dude....it's halloween....c'mon now.....
I say give a nice jumbo size Hershey bar to every kid.

If you want to get really artsy, you could make candy bags for each kid and then buy a sticker maker and put a little sticker on each bag saying something to the effect of: "Enjoy this candy now, but don't let it haunt you later: make sure to brush and floss before bed 🙂" *with an adorable ghost picture or something haha

I'm giving out five guys burgers. Gotta watch that sugar content!

Growing up our dentist always said a little candy isn't going to hurt you, just brush your teeth after you have some. So, give candy and toothbrushes 🙂

lol some dentist donate candy to the troops after Halloween: http://www.courant.com/community/hc...offering-cash-for-hallo-2015-10-26-story.html

Just remind them not to have too much candy too often 🙂.

With proper oral hygiene a little bit of Halloween candy isn't going to cause caries. It's how they take care of their mouths the other 364 days of the year.

I've never had a cavity and I ate 6 pieces of Halloween candy today

Just send out the sugar-free haribo gummy bears. They won't be eating anything else the rest of the night, I can assure you that.

It's interesting to think about. If coke addicts are going to get cocaine somewhere else anyways, does that mean you should might as well start dealing?

At one of my interviews, they were giving out handfuls of candy and chocolate to the interviewees. 😀

That sounds like torture. I would be torn between setting a good example and not taking any, or eating the entire bowl waiting for the interview to start.
I ate SO much of it. One of the other interviewees was like "wow, you're hungry". :hilarious:😳

Don't give out toothpaste... You'll be known has that guy that gave all the neighborhood kids dental fluorosis because they couldn't tell the difference between hershey and crest.
Best if consumed together

If you guys all stick to keeping peds teeth perfect then we'll all go out of business.

Depends on their effort. Full sized Twix for overachievers, fun-sized for the slackers. No costume? I think I have some travel-sized toothpaste somewhere..In my house, we run a meritocracy.

Because you don't eat candy yourself
