Any current MSTP students know of internal transfers into their program? And which one's better?

It seems that you have a fair number of reservations about Mayo's location that you express in different ways. I wouldn't particularly worry about the money; living on a $30k + health insurance stipend in Chicago seems doable (if not wonderful). You'll live better than your fellow students on loans for sure.

Northwestern hands down. Better program in my opinion (others will fight me on that though) and in a super nice location compared to Rochester.

Fellow MSTP applicant here

8 years is a longgg time to be stuck in one place. I like to think back to where I was 8 years ago (freshman year of high school!) to really grasp how long that is. The stakes are even higher when it's the remainder of your 20's. Since both institutions are highly respected and have plentiful research opportunities (and even then NW may have an edge here), go with the place where you'll find the most satisfaction outside of school when it comes to social life, dating, and hobbies. It sounds like that's Chicago for you. The only place Mayo seems to have the edge lifestyle-wise is athletics, but Chicago will have recreational leagues you can join, and I bet it's possible to start one up yourself at NW. You'd save more of your stipend going to Mayo, but what would you really spend that extra money on when there's not much going on in town?

Hi folks!

So... I am deciding between Northwestern's and Mayo's MSTP programs and having a hard time. On one hand, Mayo's resources are incredible, where Northwestern's are great (I think) but not as well-funded. On the other, Mayo had a really small-town feel and none of the students I met there were from bigger cities and so couldn't give me a feel for how living there would be.

Other notes:
-I went to a big city college and am used to a million things going on all the time, even though I didn't really go out often in college and know I won't have a ton of time in med school anyway.
-I haven't yet decided on a research field.
-I'm single and really want to maximize my chances of settling down some time in the next 8 years. I got the impression at Mayo that the only people in town are other people affiliated with Mayo (and I don't really want to date within my class) and that people who come in single often leave single.
-I have strong athletic interests, and I got the impression that Mayo makes it easier to get involved in sports as a student (student teams, etc) than NW
-The student stipend is going to go further in Rochester Minnesota than in Chicago IL. I don't have a ton of savings built up, and although I won't go into debt because it's an MSTP program, I don't want to spend all my money on rent...

Any thoughts?
Northwestern, just in terms of getting to a large airport to get the heck out of Dodge once in awhile. I interviewed at Mayo, and thought the flights/airport left a lot to be desired. I live in the midwest, but within 1/2 hour of Detroit Airport. Never really appreciated it until I started interviewing this year.
