Well that's quite a dilemma.

🙂 On a serious note, did you work in basic science research? Maybe clinical research would be more to your liking. You may want to try it out if you can.

Have you learned enough about science and the scientific method to be able to understand what Dr Midlife meant when she wrote:

“you've preferably had some exposure to research so you can be convinced that Wakefield used malicious dirtbag methods and is not the savior of the world's children.”

???

The research powerhouses love student researchers, but you've done your stint and if you can get a LOR, then I think you're OK to fatten your app with other ECs.

I'm a sophomore. I've been in a lab for 1.5 years now, and I'm going to leave this lab. I barely do anything and there is no publication/poster/anything in sight. I was going to start mass emailing departments to find a new position, but it hit me that I have no interest in research. I don't want to do research as a career, I want to cure patients. Anyway, would it be detrimental to my application if I did research for the first 1.5 years of college and then quit? I would focus that time on my studies and volunteering. I've also taken 4 prereqs at a different 4-year institution (not nearly as prestigious as my home institution). Lol...

Your lack of motivation to do research is sort of tied to your um.... bad first impression of your first research gig, I think.

You can try and hack it in a more interesting lab and a more supportive PI/mentor.
If school work is conflicting with research, do a summer research program of sorts if you think your research background is lacking. This can result in a poster.
