Hi everyone,

So next semester I am planning on taking 13 hours, but one of the classes will be pass/fail. It's not a pre-req and its not required for my degree or a science class. Will medical schools look down on this? The reason I want to take this pass/fail is because I will also be shadowing, volunteering, and taking an MCAT prep-course for the MCAT in January.

Thanks!

Please, someone needs to answer this! I'm in the exact same position!

My guess would be that no school is going to be like "Oh yes lets give this person an II, OH WAIT..they are taking a Pass/Fail class? Lets reject them instead."

One class I took that was required for my major was pass/fail. I didn't choose that so I doubt it can hurt you. Unless its like a difficult class or something...they might wonder why you chose to take it pass fail since that is the easy way out.

It is a hard class, but the only reason I'm taking it pass/fail is because it is not required for the major that I am switching to, so why waste time on that class?

They will probably see it the same way. That since it wasn't required, why would you put effort into it. I feel like it actually comes off more negative than I originally thought. If they know your reason for doing it, it sounds like you only value hard work when it is required...or whatever idea they come up with.

Especially since you are only taking 13 credits. If you were taking 17 or even 16 or 15 I think it would look much better.

It's not ideal, but the other aspects of your application will be so much more important. If you must, go ahead. If you're only doing it because you're lazy and can actually pull off a good GPA, then do that. It's only one semester lol.

Hard work isn't only shown through academic performance. But the point is, I'm not just taking classes. I'm doing all sorts of extracurriculars, and it is a total waste of time for me to study hours upon hours for a class that I would have dropped and replaced with another class if I could. I can't because if I did I wouldn't be full time (13-4=9. Full time=12 hours). And it's too late to join another class. And the reason why I'm only taking 13 hours this semester is because I'm taking Ochem, Genetics, Cal 3 (Cal 3 is the killer, I'm not good at calculus), and chem lab (which we all know is a huge time drain). I didn't know that I would be switching majors, so that's why I'm only taking 13. If I had switched last year (wouldn't have signed up for Cal 3) then I would be taking 15-16 hours.
