So that's an easy fix right? Just have faculty stop teaching Step 2 stuff before students take Step 1 and enter the wards. Or condense the preclinical years. Or make preclinical years more systems-based and integrated while still focusing solely on Step 1. It makes no sense to teach Step 2, Step 3 or overly subspecialized clinical stuff in preclinical years. It wastes everyone's time, lowers class performance and confuses/annoys everyone.

😕 then why do schools waste time by teaching this stuff? It doesn't even make sense and I'm struggling to understand the curriculum designers' reasoning. I'm pretty sure they know what curricula are the most effective based on their academic meetings, conferences etc. so why are they sticking with the most inefficient approach? It's a complete waste of resources and a direct disrespect to the students.
Happens at KCU to top students, heard about it from upperclassmen. It isn't impossible for that to happen.
If you do badly, it looks bad. If you do well, well that’s pretty much expected.

From all my main interviews and prelim/TY interviews, no one has once asked me about my preclinical years (no one has time to sift through that). No one mentioned my class rank, which was very mediocre to slightly below average. They saw my board scores and 3rd year performance, letters, and research. That's it folks. Doing well in year 1 and 2 is only important because it can indicate scoring better on the board exam. Class rank means nothing without the board score to back it up.
Indeed. In the MD forum tons of students complain bitterly about their faculty teaching thier research, and not what is needed for wards and Boards.
This is not a new problem either. A colleague who got his MD at Stanford said they did the same thing when he was a student in the early 1980s!
At my school we have no problem teaching to Boards. We write for NBOME and have sat for COMLEX several times. We at least know what's inside the heads of NBOME. This doesn't stop the OMSIs from complaining that "You're teaching enough about what's on Boards!"
I am talking about Step 1, not COMLEX. At my school, plenty of top students get very mediocre/average board scores on Step 1. I don't think it is much different at other DO schools.
It’s amazing how much you know about other schools. Whether you like it or not, people who are top of the class tend to do very well on boards. You appear to be very disgruntled with KCU and are projecting it on every other school.
They may tend to do better than the rest of the class, but if you actually read what we are talking about you wouldn't have even posted what you did...
High rank doesn't always equate to amazing scores, from what I heard personally from upperclassmen. Just one example, I know of a rank 1 person who got a 230 with best effort. There are too many examples to list here. The blanket statement that all high rank people are destroying boards is just not true. So what is the purpose of your post?
To point out that you are an M1 always speaking like you know everything. I know it helps the ego to find stories that fit your narrative but its not based in reality. For every “2nd in the class with a 230” story you have there will be many more with high board scores. Having a good GPA that puts you at the top of the class lays a good foundation for boards and rotations. There is no denying that.
My anecdotal story: ~260 on both steps, ~3.9 gpa, top of the class. People dont typically disclose their class ranks, but the ones I know also had high step scores.
As an M1 how do you find out the M4’s class rank/board score combos without coming off as a complete weirdo? I’ve been in class with the same people for 4 years and don’t know most of their class ranks nor have I disclosed mine.
So basically you didn't understand that I was responding to someone who said that there is no one with a high rank that is getting "trash board scores"? That's what it is looking like to me. Keep your emotions in check.
Lol. Maybe they should have said “no one who is #1 in their class is getting trash board scores buddy except a few outliers.” I’m not sure what you were trying to accomplish by your response to him.
Nobody reads a research article with a statistically significant X finding and responds “but look at the outlier Y, it doesnt match the conclusion!”
No need to keep repeatedly posting straw man responses after you realized you didn't read the original discussion. You are just arguing with yourself now. Like I said, keep your emotions in check.

It isn't straw man...you are making claims like you've talked to M4s all over the country about the correlation between board scores and class rank or whatever. I am literally in the same position as you in school and I haven't even seen many M4s much less talked about class rank and such. Basically you're repeatedly saying whatever it is you believe and passing it off as fact. Like I said, if you can give me statistically significant data to back up your claims then I'll believe you. The burden of proof is on the one making claims, not the ones refuting it due to lack of evidence

We only had 4 match ortho this year, all are top 10 in the class.
This is the hallmark of ATSU-SOMA. I got a damn fine education there and did well on boards (USMLE and COMLEX both).

Research is the only thing that matters come residency. Do the other stuff if you genuinely want to. Don't do it to pad your residency app because this isn't pre-med and PDs don't care.
