It’s not really because it’s a negative or a positive (though some people perceive it as a negative). Those questions are inappropriate because they are illegal to ask (because people can use that information to discriminate against you if they don’t like the answers).
 
Same for residency, if you bring it up, they can ask but they can’t bring it up. It’s 50/50. Some will view it as a negative for one reason or another and some will think it is a positive. Talk about it if you want to but also understand that sometimes you gotta play the game. I spoke about my kids and family and how we have discussed it extensively and they found it as a positive (I think, I obviously got in and graduated). Just gotta tell the story right!
 
I was pregnant on the interview trail and I definitely feel it hurt me on interviews for residency. Long story short, if you’re a guy it probably won’t make a big difference. Sad but true.
