Hi SDN!

Just wanted to ask around for your guys' opinions - is it a bad look to change out of your interview attire on campus? I was done a couple hours before the airport shuttle arrived, and one of the front desk staff told me I could change into my street clothes because my interview day was over. I did, but I got some weird looks from people on campus, and can't help but think I may have come across as unprofessional.

What do you guys think?
As long as you're on campus, you are interviewing.

I don't think I would want to be seen on campus in less than sunday casual dress. Even if youre not required to be in a suit, youre trying to convey an image.

@Goro See that's what I thought too. Now I'm pissed at the guy at the admissions office. Why the heck did he insist I change out of my clothes?? Maybe he was being nice or something but damn it feels bad that I was sitting there looking like a fool for 2 hours. I should've gone with my better judgment but still...

I think your fine... At my last interview group we literally all changed out when we were done. Although I wouldn't do it and then go back to the admissions office if that's what you did. We changed out and then just hung out in another area away from interview day stuff. Sitting in the admissions office might have been a little weird but clearly the dude who told you to change doesn't care and as long as no one involved in admissions noticed I doubt it'll reach anywhere where it'll affect you.

Just convince yourself that there is really no point in thinking about this anymore. There is absolutely nothing you can do about this but move on. I am sure you are just fine. However, i will say that worrying is inevitable. Even if you didnt worry about this particular incident at your interview, you would probably be obsessing over something you said during the interview. It is normal to worry, but the best thing you can do for your mental health is move on and hope for the best. Good luck!

I changed at the airport after my interviews. Even at the airport, make sure to wear nice clothes though because you never know who you will sit next to at the gate, on the plane, etc.

When you go for interviews, your interview begins the moment you walk into the airport at your hometown and it doesn't stop until you are back home. You never know who you will sit next to on the plane, at a restaurant, etc.

I think I'm just frustrated that I decided to listen to the guy instead of following my gut :/ but yeah I am overthinking a bit for sure
Don’t sweat it man. I changed into sweats right after the tour. I don’t think they care. Unless you’re a total douche after the tour (if it’s the last thing of your day) then something like an outfit change isn’t gonna make or break your app lol

No I wasn't haha I was just chillin in the lobby talking with the front desk staff

You likely read too much into the looks the people gave you. You’re a random person they don’t know in a place they are in a lot. Since you weren’t in a suit and were talking to the front desk staff, they were probably just curious who you were.

The professional way to do it would’ve been to change into sweats and light a cigarette mid-interview. Doing it while you’re waiting for an airport shuttle is just plain wrong.

I did the same thing but i hated that i had to change at the airport. The bathroom stalls are too small.
