I would be amazed if any dentist ever kept track of you standing in their way, aka shadowing, for however many hours you shadowed.
If it is not listed in a schools requirement, I have never seen it, then don't worry about it. I know for a fact my dentist LoR didn't mention it.

I just heard a school requires that, but when I checked their website it didn't specify. Maybe my source is confused or it's outdated information.

Are u referring to Tufts? I think they require letters from dentists to be drafted a certain way but not fully sure.

Tufts doesn’t require it in the LOR. BUT if your general dentist’s LOR did not mention you shadowing over 40 hours, then Tufts will give you a slip of paper on interview day requesting that a general dentist email them to verify your hours.

The only tedious experience I had with mentioning shadowing in an LOR is with UNLV. According to them, the dentist who wrote my LOR didn't mention anywhere that I shadowed him, which took me by surprise lol. He just talked about my qualities and leadership skills but didn't really go into detail with the shadowing... Even though I clearly listed my shadowing experience with him on my app and he signed his letter and all that, they basically told me that he specifically needed to say in his letter "_______ shadowed me from (start date) to (end date)." He was able to resubmit it but that whole thing was so unexpected lol

Correct. Verify shadowing *40 hours from a general dentist

So Tufts doesn't require the written statement of shadowing hours in a letter of recommendation, but when it comes to the interview, they ask applicants to verify their shadowing experience?
I also remember reading that the dentist needs to specifically mention the amount of hours in the letter of recommendation; however this shouldn't be the biggest of issues as they can just contact the dentist and confirm the amount of hours that way imo.
