Headed into my senior year, I've strongly considered doing an extra year to spread my senior-year course load across 2 years. I'd be awarded my degree at the end of the fifth year. My reasons are:

1) Lightening my course load to get better grades
2) Spending more time accumulating ECs in university

I won't be applying this year, so I won't need to worry about finishing my degree for the purpose of matriculation. How would this come off to adcoms?

As long as your still a full time student I don’t see anything wrong with this. It’s becomijg increasingly Moreno common to take 5 years

It's a pre-med delusion that you have to finish UG in four straight years.

I'm not an ADCOM, but... It sounds like you are going to spread 30 credits over 2 years, so 7-8 credits a semester. That seems low unless you're working near full-time. Now, if you also put in 1000+ hours of ECs that might make up for the low credit hours, however, it could also come across as box-checking if you wait till the last year - although you would have substantially more hours than most.

Ultimately, you should focus on keeping a high GPA and find what works best for you. As long as you have a reason for a lighter schedule, you should eb fine in explaining it.

Not necessarily. I majored in engineering and they gave us a plan to graduate in 4 years that was 18+ credits each semester. Needless to say, nobody finished in 4 years.

OP how many credits will this be?

You're fine as long as you stay above full time. If you fall below full time get a job or something. I completed my bachelor's in 6 years.
