It is none of their business, I would not tell them. Color blindness is a spectrum and how much red you can or cannot see can impact your ability to pick up on certain details of the eye. Just be true to yourself, and if you find that you can’t pick up on certain things in the retina bc of being color blind, then don’t do retina. Many other fields in ophtho that you can do for sure!!
 
One of my co-residents was color-blind and he did just fine. I don’t think you need to tell your PD.
