Research is research, paid, for credit, or volunteer. Consider yourself lucky that you are getting money for what many of us are doing for free.

Don't see why not. You're doing research and not freeloading off your parents. I did paid research in undergrad too, my first paycheck went to my very first gun 🙂

How about research as independent study? Do they count towards sGPA?

Yes it counts and yes it can count as sGPA. I have like 18ish credits of independent study? Good stuff. Nice GPA padding. (Not used as padding as everything around it is good grades too, but still. All sFPA).
Wow, your got 18 credits. Some schools allow only 6 towards major.

How can being paid be a bad thing. At least at my school, if you’re being paid by the lab or through a stipend it means you have more research experience and your work is considered valuable. The people who are working for free (at my school) are usually doing research for the first time.

I have lots of research experience and all of it was paid. I don't think it's being looked down upon.
Hard to do research if you can't afford to eat.

My broke and ignant ass was about to say “just go get food stamps” then I realized I only qualify because I have a child and most college students have to work 20 hours a week to qualify...
Tl;dr - entitlements programs are weak and punishes people who just want an education...
I think paid research can't be used for independent study credits at lot of schools.

I was paid through a stipend through a fellowship program and was still allowed to get credit for independent research. I also think it’s hard to do good quality research during the school year as part of an independent project. It’s better to get a paid position and work full time over the summer.

True that. I have been more productive in the one month I have been volunteering this summer than all of last quarter as independent study.
Also, did something very similar for paid research, got a small grant from my university, but I directed the funds towards my project as opposed to myself so that I could get new equipment.
Are you saying you need to work a minimum of 20 hrs to be eligible or a maximum to be eligible for welfare programs?

If you are not a student (or if you have a child), there is no work requirement. If you ARE a student (at least half time) you have to work a minimum of 20 hours a week to qualify for food stamps/EBT. That is why federal work study programs on campus max out at 19 hours per week. It forces you to look for work off campus if you want federal benefits.
