This is just my opinion, but I would choose your mom every time. I had friend go through the same thing so I know missing school and/or trying to push through it takes a heavy toll - you have the rest of your life to be a dentist. Sending best wishes to you and your family.

Take the leave of absence. You do not have to go through admissions again and school will be waiting, you should be there for your family.
I’m very sorry you and your family are going through something so difficult.

My heart breaks for you. Please spend time with your mother and family. Dental school will always be here for you.
I agree with the previous unanimous suggestions. Regretting not spending enough time with loved ones is never worth it. My thoughts and prayers for you and your family. That's great that you've already been able to be such a great support system for your mom!

The "correct" answer is not always the practical answer. The "correct" answer according to society is that you should be with your mom. The practical answer is a lot more complex.
If you take a leave of absence now, pros is that you get to maximize your time with your mom. The big question would be, what are the consequences of taking a leave of absence? If this is really affecting your academic performance and there are minimal career/academic consequences, then you should take the leave. No use in continuing if there's a chance of failing, and failure will result in you having to retake a test, retake a year, or get expelled. If there are significant consequences to taking a leave, then you may want to weigh your decision more carefully. I am sure that your mother would want you to grow up to be a successful professional and not want you to jeopardize that.
So, if there are little consequences to taking the leave, go take your leave and hopefully you will be sufficiently refreshed when you get back, as long as this does not affect you for the long term. If there are significant consequences, then you must weigh your decision more carefully, especially if it's going to affect your long-term career. If you plan to specialize, you have to think about this strategically. If your grades are poor only this semester, would declaring a leave of absence hide this semester's poor grades? If it does, then it only reinforces the decision more to take your leave.
