Or are units + a grade considered payment?
Units + a grade = a class. Actually, you are the one paying, assuming you pay for your credits! It's hard to see how you would justify double dipping by reclassifying a class as a volunteer experience.

Volunteering is supposed to demonstrate altruism, and is supposed to be something you do to benefit others. Fulfilling a degree requirement and receiving academic credit for the experience does not exactly fit this universally understood definition, and is really not what the schools are looking for when asking about volunteering.

You can certainly talk about the experience if it was meaningful to you, as long as you make clear you did it as part of your academic program and received credit and a grade for it. I just don't think the hours will count as "volunteering," since you are already receiving credit for the hours as part of your degree.

I mean you can get units and a grade for research experience, but that does not mean it is a class. But let's say you can get units and a grade for volunteering in a hospital. Would you say that is a class?

You received something in return for the time spent in the hospital. If we want to boil this down to "exchange of goods and services", your service in the hospital was exchanged for credit towards your bachelor's degree.
