I'll put it this way. When I interviewed at UCLA-NPI, my co-applicants were from Cornell, Harvard, UCSD, UCLA, UC Davis, and Stanford. We all had research. We each had a publication or two.

Perhaps aim for Olive View?

UCLA Harbor #1, followed by Olive View, Drew, Greater LA-VA, USC. Then UCD, UCSD UCI, UCR etc. UCSF, Standford and UCLA-NPI is not on my list for those same reasons. I hope other programs are not as competitive.

Drew is a horrendous program. All those UC's are significantly better. Don't go to drew just to be in LA.

Do you think Harbor is just as competitive as NPI or at the level of Olive view?

Harbor is less competitive than NPI but above the other UCLA-affiliated programs. Also, top programs don't just care about research, but if you have any other meaningful extracurriculars, advocacy or community work, those are needlessly to say super valuable as well. It doesn't hurt to apply to UCLA/ shut down the opportunity without even trying, especially if you have a strong personal narrative for going into psychiatry. Also another note, UCR, when I was interviewing and speaking to other applicants that are there, seems to be looking for people that will end up providing care for people in the Inland Empire. Also, don't forget about the Kaiser programs, San Mateo, etc.

I've heard mixed things, but some pretty good, so I'm curious, what makes you say "horrendous?"
