So would you be with the doctor Zooming/FaceTiming the patients? How would it work?(I ‘m fully aware of how Telemedicine/video appts work I’m just wondering how they would set you up. What have they suggested ?)

Sounds good in theory but may not be ideal. Is there a way that you could watch but not participate? (Edit: didn't see post above). It might be tricky navigating back and forth from student to doctor to patient.

Remember to try to save your questions for the end and avoid interjecting things into the visit--the doctor will tell you when (s)he is ready to talk to you specifically. This is probably the #1 biggest mistake that premeds make during shadowing--commenting at an inappropriate time or asking too many questions.

Thank you for adding that note. I believe they would show us their day and interactions then go to their office and take questions at the end.
Just out of curiosity, where on YouTube are you finding these opportunities? Or is it through someone you know?

Sure, please do so! Thanks 🙂

I've been watching the virtual shadowing that med school coach puts out. It's pretty good! It's the only virtual shadowing I've watched so far where physicians go through patient cases. Not sure how admissions committees are going to look at it...but I guess it's better than nothing! It's on the med school coach website, shadowing.medschoolcoach.com

Virtual shadowing = rubbish IMHO. You don't watch a few videos on Youtube and claim it as shadowing.

The entire purpose is to shadow the doctor and learn what his day is like. If you aren't actually there, you're missing a lot. The patients smell. The body language not picked up by the camera. The pile of paperwork on the desk. All of the insurance companies calling regarding needed pre-authorizations. You get the idea.

If shadowing activities are not available, get a clinical job like scribing or MA. This will give you the clinical exposure you need.
