You can still do it. Uphill battle for sure but just get connected and do lots of research. Show your interest. Get amazing letter of recs. Maybe take a gap year. Do well on step 2. You can match at a low tier program.

Obv tame your expectations. Programs like Iowa, Wills, Bascom are definitely out but low tier and maybe lower mid tier are fine. You’ll still be an ophthalmologist and most of education is what you put in.

You still have a chance, but all the other stars have to align. Do well in school, redeem yourself on step 2, get good research and good LORs even if it means taking a gap year, and apply broadly. You’ll get rejected from some places based on their screening algorithm for step 1, but people with 220s can match into ophtho.

edit: agree with applying to a backup specialty too. The worst thing you can do is not match into anything period. I’ve seen people go through SOAP and it seems like a very humbling process. Don’t put yourself in that position. Good luck
 
Ophtho is a who-you-know subspecialty. Get in tight with an influential attending and hope (s)he goes to bat for you.
