Are you sure this an IA? A decision by an individual faculty member within the confines of his/her course may not meet that threshold.

Hi,

Freshman year first quarter, I took an introductory computer science class and created a study group. For a compsci assignment, we worked through the problems together, and in essence, basically worked through them to end with near identical code. Though people may find it ridiculous, my professor warned us about collaboration and to do it minimally, though it is allowed. However, naïvely and stupidly, I told myself it would be fine as long as I don’t actively copy-paste or take pictures of code from others/get code from the internet. As a result, the professor determined this collaboration was explicit collaboration that violated academic policy, and I received an F for the class. Though the F is harsh, I understand that our collaboration may have crossed the line into academic dishonesty. However, the professor also made it clear that they found no other penalties warranted. I will report this no matter what when the time comes, but I wonder whether it may also be the end of my premed career, even with good stats and ecs. I feel that the best way to move on from this is to take responsibility and learn from it.

Ultimately though, by reporting this, do I have a chance at med school?

@Goro
You will be ok in the end. Something similar happened to me and I will tell you the worst thing you can do is worry about it passively. Good luck! There is a spot for you somewhere

I echo @Med Ed , verify if this is an IA. But regardless, you are fortunate this happened in freshman year as that means you’ll be at least 3 years removed from the incident when you apply. As long as you keep a clean nose going forward and own the mistake, this seems like something that can be overlooked provided the rest of your application is strong

I agree to investigate if this is really an IA (how is this documented?). Even if your professor doesn't have criteria of what is improper collaboration for a computer science coding class (is it in the syllabus?) you need to own it. No it doesn't sound to me like it is a app breaker.

You should work with student conduct on your answer to the questions about IA's that you will get.

Even if it is an IA, it is not necessarily a dealbreaker. Own up to your mistake, and be careful to follow the rules from now on. One screwup in freshman year is forgivable.

Definitely will investigate further! I’m worried that the F coupled with the IA will automatically cause them to think that the infraction was quite major and unforgivable, even if I explain the circumstances (in no way do I think I’m innocent, but I think this may cause them to rule it as a major red flag).
That's why you need your student conduct office to make sure it is properly described, if they can help you.

There is nobody here that can answer your questions with perfect certainty.
You have gotten good advice so follow it. Many of your responders are actual ADCOMS or Faculty etc.
Sometimes you just have to accept what you have and not worry about it. There is not one thing that worrying will fix.
Good luck as you move forward.

I know IAs are the dreaded red flag… how would this be looked at? I know this also probably sits within the academic dishonesty category, which I thought was the “kiss of death” on my app… and the big F probably doesn’t help my image at all.
Not all IAs are the same, especially when committed as a FR or SO. It doesn't look that bad to me.
