I'm not sure you need a research year. You have a pretty good step 2 score. If you can get a few Derm/Dermpath projects under your belt (start now), I'm not sure you need the extra year.

You can approach the derm department and ask if it would be ok for you attend their grand rounds or if there are any other lectures/activities you could attend.
