Has anyone heard of anyone going on 15+ anesthesia interviews and not matching?

I just certified a draft of my NRMP rank list and I started getting the prematch jitters. I know its all paranoia, but has anyone ever heard of someone not matching with 15+ interviews?

I don't want to come off as the typical BS 260 Step 1 SDN kid that is wondering if they have a shot. Obviously thats not me, but I truly am curious!!

BTW I have 1 interview left and' I just wanted to say, all you fellow interviewees were great! Cant say the same for programs but anesthesia def. attracts great personalities and I look forward to working with you!

Nope. 15 interviews sounds like a virtual lock, but then again, I've been around this game as long as you have.

Hopefully, if nothing else, your home program is solid, and would be okay with you to match there. You've gotta figure they know you pretty good.

...I hope I didn't jinx myself.

Has it happened? I'm sure that it has, but what good would it do to find specific examples at this point? Justify our paranoia? I'm sure this is more of an issue for FMGs anyway.

Several program directors who have been doing this for year have told us that if we managed to land interviews at competitive programs that send invites to 150 out of the 1000 applicants we will DEF match into anes. in the end.

I have asked many residents where they ranked the program they are currently at, and all but one said in the top 5.

Unless you have a severe personality disorder, I think 15+ IVs will guarantee you a spot somewhere.

If your application is good enough to warrant 15 interviews, it is good enough for you to match at one of those programs. Probably 99.9999% chance you match.

Thanks a lot guys... Makes me feel a whole lot better. I try not to buy into "this is the most competitive year" hype, but its hard when you hear it so many times. My app is pretty solid (maybe not stellar like the 240+ SDN fanboys, but solid) and US MD so I guess I can try and keep those jitters to a minimum. We'll know come mid-march.

In the mean time I'll enjoy the rest of 4th year. Cheers!

Charting Outcomes in the Match, 2007: Of the 529 US senior applicants who ranked 10 programs or more, 2 did not match. That's a 0.37% unmatched rate. Or a 99.63% chance of matching somewhere. Of those that ranked 15 or more programs, 100% matched. You should be fine.

i think the competitiveness makes it more scary than it is. if you look at the stats, there are still more spots than applicants (although its very very close). its not like derm where there's like 1.5-1.8 applicants per spot. that would suck.

chill out, and get your gambler side some hot chocolate while you let the dice roll!!

ive changed my rank list 3 times since the 15th when it opened.

The overwhelming chances are that, if you are a U.S. grad (MD or DO), you will match at one of your top 3. So, pick those top 3 very carefully. The rest are (and should be) a toss-up. If they interviewed you, you are a contender... unless, of course, you have a third arm growing out of your forehead.

i think a third arm is arguably a bonus if you can place an IV with it while intubating the pt.

OMG I want.

I am *always* running out of arms. And I'm not even in anesthesia yet.

I think that would be an advantage, at least that's what the interviewers keep telling me

One of my favorite Zoidberg quotes:

Dr. Zoidberg: I'm afraid your body was badly damaged in the crash.
Fry: How badly?
Dr. Zoidberg: That's it over there.

Dr. Zoidberg: There you are, good as new. Except for your dorsal fin. I'm afraid we couldn't find it after the crash.
Fry: Can I live without it?
Dr. Zoidberg: If you call that living.

Other funny ones LOL:

According to the NRMP stats for 2007 <http://www.nrmp.org/data/chartingoutcomes2007.pdf> there is zero chance of you going unmatched.

With 15+ interviews, you're likely going to match. The only things that would prevent you from matching would be ranking only like 2 programs or coming off as clinical insane at all your interviews.

if u goto 10 interviews u have a 90% chance on matching. look at the old match data

Probably should of thought twice about showing up in a blue tuxedo complete with cane and top hat.
