150 hours of dental shadowing + 100 hours of general volunteering = weak ECs?

I don't have anything else other than that. 🙁

But my GPA is 3.9 coming from a competitive university.

Assuming I do well on the DAT and have a good interview, what's the likelihood I get into a top dental school like UCLA??

Thanks!

what qualifies a school to be a "top" dental school?

Numbers always come first. If you get a solid DAT score and can explain in your interview why you feel that your EC's are strong enough for a school like UCLA, you should be fine. Schools like to see well-rounded applicants, and that doesn't necessarily have to be shown through your EC's.

That's very good to hear, thanks for that. So a lot of decisions do come down to the interview then I see...

How would anyone REALLY know? Anecdotically, people with strong GPA+DATs get accepted (even if they have low-to-no volunteering hours)

The thing is, apparently people with strong GPA + DATs also get rejected, which is what worries me.

I was on predents and everyone who gets accepted to UCLA apparently is perfect. Lots of guys have a very impressive list of ECs along with good stats.

dude, you have a 3.94 GPA, with no DAT...you're asking for your chances? Who do you think gets in, only people with 3.95 and above? If you had a GPA for common sense you would not make Dean's List.

the people with strong GPA and DAT that get rejected are the dweebs that go in to an interview and can't hold a normal conversation. Hope that's not you.

Uncalled for, no need to take a cheap shot like that. In the original post, I stated "if I do well on the DAT."

No, I don't think people with 3.95's automatically get in. That's why I made the thread. Derp.

You posted a similar thread 6 months ago where you were asking about your chances (asking people that are in similar circumstances as you are to post success stories amounts to the same thing as asking for chances) and asked people to assume you were going to "do a decent amount of shadowing, kill [your] post-bacc and rock the DAT."

Stop hating brah.

At this point, does being worried help you in any way? Can you go back now and stuff 200+ hours worth of volunteering in the next couple weeks before submitting AADSAS? If you say no, then this thread is done. The responses will be irrelevant to your current standings.

Relax, enjoy the wait, and prepare for future interviews.

dude 3.9gpa is already awesome. your question is more like bragging than anything lol. either way, you've already done enough and you're about to apply. Like dentalworks said, just sit tight and wait. You're in a fortunate position compared to a lot of people. I just hope you're not :lame:

For what it's worth the "top" schools (high statistical averages), UCLA tends to take people with good stats (gpa and dat scores) and UCSF tends to take people with a unique background (struggles, hardships, etc). I know this because these deans of admission have come to my school to talk and I've asked them what they look for. Don't sweat the small stuff, i think you're good
