If you’re interested in academia, that 5th year at Cleveland Clinic isn’t as big of a downside in my opinion.

Prestige is a wash and match list is a wash. Everyone and their mother has heard these names!

I’d follow the money and go Cleveland Clinic, unless Mayo ups their offer!

For what it's worth, I am currently working in a research lab at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, and my PI (who is relatively high up in the LRI) has said that he believes that CC is in a relatively good spot with regard to funding cuts from the federal government. Whether that means there will be little to no cuts, the backup/contingency plan is robust, or something else, I am not sure; but, there has been no notable change here thus far and my PI at least is confident that the institution is ready to handle chaos.
 
I would say mayo AZ if you don't care about the loans and want the shorter training time and cleveland if you do. I'd personally go for mayo in this case.

disclosure: I am also deciding between mayo AZ and another t20/25 (baylor). have heard mixed messages on whether or not mayo AZ specifically is better than baylor- some say its not the real thing while others say mayo is mayo. have you heard anything about the relative reputation between mayo rochester, mayo phoenix, and how its compared to other T20s?

Mayo MN has a bit better match list but Mayo is Mayo. Everyone knows Mayo!
 
Mayo MN > CCLCM >>> Mayo AZ. The outcomes at Mayo AZ are def a step down compared to CCLCM and Mayo MN imo. If it was MN I’d say go Mayo but there is def a difference between MN and AZ

Out of curiosity is there specific data that supports this? Or is this more anecdotal?

I’m saying this looking at the match lists at AZ vs MN and also the resources for research. MN had significantly better matches and way more research than AZ.

Furthermore even though it’s technically the same mayo system, each campus (MN, FL, AZ) have their own hospitals and residencies, and they are all not of equal caliber. They do not have even close to equivalent research output nor reputation in individual specialities. I suppose the quantitative data to back my claim would be the rankings for the individual campuses.

The counterpoint to this is that you can work with Mayo MN faculty from CCLCM too, there is nothing stopping you. But this is ultimately a personal choice on how much the Mayo affiliation really matters and what your goals are.
 
40+ yrs experience here( U of ILL CHICAGO 1977). Get your MD/DO asap and do your residency and get into practice! The “prestige “ stuff for med school is WAY overplayed.

CCLCM: (Full-tuition scholarship)

Pros:
  • Full-tuition scholarship
  • Prestige? Really incredible match list
  • Research opportunities are unmatched
  • Honestly really like the curriculum/model
  • Interested in becoming an academic physician; this sets me up well!
Cons:
  • Unsure how I'll do with no tests
  • Far from home (and most of my support system)
  • Seemingly mandatory classes
  • 5th year means one less year of salary
  • Worried about how federal cuts might impact the broader program/access to research
MCASOM: (50% Scholarship)

Pros:
  • Close to home; may be easier to match back into CA
  • NBME-style exams
  • Seems to not be as affected by NIH defunding
  • Only 4 years
Cons:
  • Seems to have less research focus/opportunities throughout training
  • Tuition -- COA is 200k greater and not too excited to take out loans in this economy
  • AZ campus seems to have worse outcomes residency-wise
  • No pediatric home residency program (though I guess there is PCH?)

I would go for Lerner unless you are very keen to stay close to home. Regardless, do your best to increase your merit scholarship at Mayo by leveraging CCLCM’s package. Best of luck, congrats, crazy cycle getting into both THE clinics
