Hi guys,

SDN IS AN ADDICTION!

Ever since I signed up (aka, yesterday), I probably came onto SDN more than 50 times. That's... craziness.

SOOO.

I have a 16 in my bio section.. which I totally choked on. The whole science section for that matter... (17 GC, 19 OC) :: 17 TS.

Will schools automatically reject me b/c of my low science score? Or will they put me in another pile to review perhaps? I have a masters in Biochemistry.. which will probably be hard for them to believe! I am just a bad test taker. Eek.

I am afraid of taking the exam in November and then by that time, a lot of the seats are filled, so it seems like what's the point for this cycle? I'm so scared!

Thanks guys! :hello:

Honestly I think you're going to have a hard time getting in with a 17TS. What was your AA?

I would schedule a retake for November. Worst case scenario you update the schools with those scores late Nov. or early Dec. and they reject you. But if you do well in November, you'll be ready to go for next year.

Good luck!

Like he said. I don't know your GPA, but if it's really good, say 3.8+, then you have a decent chance. If it's 3.5 or below, then you will have a very hard time getting in. Impossible? Not at all, but it won't be easy either.

4 years ago everyone on this forum was getting 18s and you were hard pressed to see someone post a 23. Now, EVERYONE is getting a 23 and it's almost impossible to find someone with an 18 and below. Has the average shifted THAT much? Not at all. Maybe 1 point at most, but it's just that those with more average or lower scores are not posting their scores, and those that DO post their scores will have 22+ becuase they're just bragging.

Tough break, i would retake for sure, and would not rush into retaking. You absolutely have to kill it your second time. I think schools would expect you to kill the sciences with a masters in Biochem.
Is it the testing environment that gets you, or the material? I wouldn't retake until you are getting 20+ TS on timed practice tests.

hey a retake is probably a good idea. However you need to use the right study materials. I honestly have not met anybody with low scores by using the detsroyer especially for the sciences. The math detsroyer worked great for math and the DAT destroyer was amazing for me. I got a 26 in org, 23 in chem, 20 in bio by using the destroyer, ap bio cliffs, and wikipedia.

yayforteeth, you get a 16 on bio when you have a master in biochem? did you get your master in new guinea or something? cuz it doesn't make sense!

Breakdown was:

Bio 16
GC 17
OC 19
TS 17

PAT 19
RC 24

AA 19

Haha yes... A masters in biochem.. I think i was banking on my biology skills that i didn't really hone in on that subject while i was studying. that was... incredibly stupid! but i learned.. SO.

the next step is to retake in november! and one more quick question.. i should call the schools and let them know that I am retaking and to hold my application, right? if i don't, they will probably flat out reject me with that score, yes? haha.. i'm sad.

and where do i get all these materials? i studied only the kaplan book (and the cd didn't work for me) and i had no practice tests whatsoever... only the 2 from that kaplan book.

also, real quick.. i am surprised i got a 24 on rc. i am REALLY bad at verbal or reading comp or anything.. so i'm really scared to retake and that score drop crazilyyyyy. and to be quite honest, i only did those 2 practice tests in kaplan and didn't do that well on them.. so i really really don't know how i got a 24. (i am not trying to modest or humble.. i am REALLY shocked). 😱

please help me! i am so lost!

thanks guys!

wait. so retake for sure? 😀 haha. just had to ask.

Oh, and the math section:

QR 17

oh, and gpa:

undergraduate:
overall 3.4; science 3.3

graduate
overall 3.7; science 3.7

hope this helps!

everyone is probably right, you should probably retake....

....however, my scores are actually worse than yours, and I have already received 3 interviews

With all due respect, that's completely uncalled for and you really need to learn how to tone it down a bit. Your comments may appear harmless to you but I don't think you realize that they have no relevence nor are they even remotely helpful. I'm not pointing fingers but it seems as though every comment you make that I've read thus far has been derogatory in nature.

Well the positive is you've got a good undergrad GPA and a great graduate GPA along with a good AA. After reading that I don't think you're in as bad of shape but I would still plan on a retake just in case. I do think the low TS coupled with a masters in biochem is a little bit of a red flag for dental schools.

Make sure you take everyone's advice with a grain of salt. None of us are adcoms so in the end you should do what you feel most comfortable with.

You guys are all so helpful! 😳

So I basically panicked and called some schools to put my app on hold til my November DAT scores get in...

I called Case and they said they do have a minimum of 18 across all sections! I think mine was going to go under review and they "stopped" it and put it on hold just in time... Whew!

I really want to go to Maryland! I lived in Baltimore for a couple years now and changed my residency to Maryland...

Do you think I should I also tell Maryland to hold off on my app or should I stick with my current DAT for them? I was thinking I could hold off on some schools and still use the same score on some to keep me sort of in the "earlier (later)" part of the cycle (aka, before november).

Also, I would love to go to BU or Tufts! Haha. Just throwing that out there. 😀

SDN is so awesome! Hahaha..

Any schools you guys recommend with the current scores that I have? And if I "ROCK" the DATS in November, would that list of schools perhaps change? Haha.

Yay for dentistry! 😉

Tini- I'm sure you submitted way earlier than I did (submitted early September!) and probably have great recs and extracurriculars.

Do you mind me asking what schools you applied to?

Thanks!

😳

Also remember that no one in this forum is on a dental school board so don't take their opinions as facts. I have many friends with high GPA's, incredible community service work, great recommendations but low DAT's (17-18) and got into great dental schools. So don't let "the SDN Forum" guide your life's decisions.
